a - the +1,+7 quick blade of Ungoat (weapon) {god gift, flame, rPois}
(Trog gifted it to you on level 11 of the Dungeon)
It emits flame when wielded, causing extra injury to most foes and up to
double damage against particularly susceptible opponents. Big, fiery blades
are also staple armaments of hydra-hunters.
It protects you from poison.

My second God gift this game. I fought my way down to d9 with naught but Ijyb's +2,+1 elven dagger (not a brand on any kind of short sword) and I was starting to worry about my ability to do damage when I got my first gift, a mediocre randart short sword. Then, as I start to worry about finding the lair, and find d:11 filled with bees, Trog gives me this. I'm now free to tackle all the bees, spiny frogs, and hydrae in the world without fear. Thank you Trog. I love you so much. I'm so sorry about my dalliance with Lucy. Take me back baby! *cue horrifying spriggan on rage god makeout sound effects*

danr wrote:My current HaHu has the sling "Punk" and the Captain's Cutlass. Can't really get much better than those for a SBl / Slings user.

That's some nice fixedarts. Praise Trog! (I assume).

Okawaru, actually. He also gave me the ratskin cloak and a total of about 60 steel bullets.

Here's the full description of all the artifacts I've got going right now on this HaHu:

a - the +6,+7 Captain's cutlass (weapon) {speed, Dam+3}
(You bought it in a shop on level 6 of the Dungeon)
b - the +9,+12 sling "Punk" {god gift, frost, rC+}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 2 of the Swamp)
F - the +5,+8 sling of Fragile Peace {venom, +Blink Str+3 Int+1}
(You took it off a vault guard on level 8 of the Vaults)
q - the +2 pair of boots of the Assassin (worn) {+Inv Dex+3 Stlth++}
(You found it on level 8 of the Vaults)
v - the +3 robe of Clouds (worn) {+Lev rElec}
(You took it off a wizard in The Chambers of Frampyj the Cloud Mage)
L - the +1 ratskin cloak (worn) {god gift, rPois rN+ Dex-1 Int-1}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 3 of the Lair of Beasts)
J - the +1 pair of gloves of the New World (worn) {+Inv}
(You bought it in a shop on level 4 of the Orcish Mines)

I was pretty pumped when I got those gloves, but now they are the lamest piece of armour I have and the +Inv is redundant. Interestingly only two of those artefacts are god gifts.

To round it out, my remaining armour slots:
M - a +2 shield of reflection (worn)
N - a +2 wizard hat of intelligence (worn)

And here's why I'm preferring Okawaru to Trog:
  Code:
 Your Spells              Type           Power        Success   Level  Hunger
a - Magic Dart            Conj           ####.        Excellent   1    None
b - Apportation           Tloc           ####......   Excellent   1    None
c - Swiftness             Air/Chrm       #####.....   Excellent   2    None
d - Blink                 Tloc           N/A          Excellent   2    None
e - Repel Missiles        Air/Chrm       #####.....   Excellent   2    None
f - Mephitic Cloud        Pois/Air/Conj  ####......   Excellent   3    Choko
g - Conjure Flame         Fire/Conj      ####.....    Great       3    Choko
h - Berserker Rage        Chrm           N/A          Excellent   3    Choko
i - Regeneration          Chrm/Necr      ####......   Great       3    Choko
j - Abjuration            Summ           ####......   Great       3    Choko
k - Flight                Air/Chrm       #####.....   Great       4    Honeycomb
l - Control Teleport      Chrm/Tloc      ####......   Very Good   4    Honeycomb

Also - a charged up wand of healing, and a charged up wand of hasting, and a few wands of teleportation.

And of course Okawaru's heroism and finesse, although I've lost finesse twice now - once due to stupidly using summon butterflies as meat shields against a centaur pack, and once by test-id'ing an amulet of faith. But I have enough other sources of haste and speed that that's okay.

Curiously though I have not found any artefact jewellery worth keeping. The only artefact ring I found was something like MUT Dex-6 +Lev. My only real weakness is in resistances, but I can put on at least one level of each resistance if needed.

I might just make it out of Zot this time!

Vehumet's wizardry bonus is good enough that it should be able to overcome the casting penalty from ring mail. My last couple of Vehumetians have tromped around in swamp dragon armour with little trouble.

The evasion penalty from ring mail is only -2 anyway, so you should be able to overcome that with a relatively small skill in armor (if you wanted to reduce the hit even further.) That ringmail is AWESOME!

V - the +0 robe of Paranoia {MR}

All this in one game:

the +3 robe "Acim" (worn) {rElec rC+}
(You found it on level 5 of the Dungeon)
It protects you from cold.
It insulates you from electricity.

the +2,+9 hammer of Slow Death (weapon) {crush, rF++ Dex+3}
(You found it on level 6 of the Dungeon)
It inflicts extra damage upon your enemies.
It affects your dexterity (+3).
It greatly protects you from fire.

the +3,+6 dagger of Turmoil {speed, rN+ MR Str+2 Int+2 Stlth++}
(You found it on level 10 of the Dungeon)
Attacks with this weapon take half as long as usual.
It affects your strength (+2).
It affects your intelligence (+2).
It protects you from negative energy.
It increases your resistance to enchantments.
It makes you much more stealthy.

I had a few other good finds in the same game but I stashed them so I don't have the stats anymore.

i have a SpEn of Okawaru going that has got some pretty nice artefacts so far:

a - the +3,+4 Vampire's Tooth (weapon) {vamp, !w}
(You found it on level 5 of the Lair of Beasts)
It inflicts no extra harm, but heals its wielder somewhat when it strikes a
living foe.

m - the +3 wizard hat of the Lonely Wonders (worn) {god gift, rN+ SInv Stlth++}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 2 of the Hive)
It protects you from negative energy.
It enhances your eyesight.
It makes you much more stealthy.

G - the +6 robe of the Orb Guardian (worn) {god gift, rF+ rN+ Int+2}
(Okawaru gifted it to you on level 2 of the Shoals)
It affects your intelligence (+2).
It protects you from fire.
It protects you from negative energy.

y - the ring of Kuxtiam (right hand) {rElec EV+5 Str+2}
(You found it on level 2 of the Hive)
[ring of evasion]
It affects your evasion (+5).
It affects your strength (+2).
It insulates you from electricity.

Q - the ring of Gazxoir (left hand) {SustAb rPois MR}
(You found it in an ice cave)
[ring of sustain abilities]
It protects you from poison.
It increases your resistance to enchantments.

I've found six randart rings in my current game (also three sets of artifact boots!), and I've only got two runes.

Fortunately, although most of them went straight back on the floor, one of them is really nice - and another was in a vault with the Crown of Dyroprevera 8-)

Hmm actually come to think of it, I almost never find fixedarts, and this game has had at least three - the Crown, the Scythe of Curses (very funny) and the Bow of Krishna "Sharnga".

Trog gave me the following with my first winning character, a long time ago.

a - the +2,+8 executioner's axe "Pukux Lot" (weapon)
It allows its wielder to attack twice when they would otherwise have struck only once.
It protects you from fire.
It protects you from cold.
It protects you from poison.
It enhances your eyesight.

So speed, F+, C+, rPoison, see invis on the biggest axe you can get. I can't remember finding another weapon so nice. I very rarely see an artefact weapon good enough for use in Zot. Rings and amulets are usually the best artefacts.

My last character bought the shield of the gong from a shop. Most convenient shield ever. You can chill out in a corridor with a staircase and ALL the level's enemies will queue up in that corridor to get their asses kicked. WARNING: not suitable for use in vault 8. I had to exchange it for another shield though because titanic slime creatures are assholes.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this one. Found it fairly early too. Speed is nice, but tele. is a big turn off for me, at least until I get tele. control. Also, playing as a naga VM, so... :/

That said I got 2(!) staffs on the same floor, one of poison and the other of magical power, and a +2 +4 ring of slaying so I'm all good.

Halberds have the lowest possible base damage of all two-handed weapons. You sacrifice a shield to wield a weapon less damaging than some one-handed weapons. Compare the broad axe, which is fairly common on basic orcs, and lets you wear a shield, has the same attack delay, is more accurate, and actually deals more damage.

"Inferior" weapons can be choices sometimes, depending on brand or randart generation, or if the rng just refuses to provide the superior weapon you actually want. Some inferior weapon types can also serve as stepping stones- ie, you wield them while you're still training up weapon skills for a better attack delay, then you trade up to something better when your skills allow it.

If halberds get buffed, that means some other weapon will be the weakest possible two-handed weapon. I'm probably not going to settle on a halberd as my endgame weapon, but if my merfolk finds an artifact halberd of flaming with a couple useful resistances, and I haven't found a buckler yet, then I'm certainly going to use it through Lair even if I eventually hope to find something better.

That one artifact halberd posted earlier had berserkitis on it, though, so it would have been pretty much dead to me as soon as I identified it.
