I was an MiMo using unarmed, I had about 10 invested into unarmed already (yes I found this rather early) so it really wasn't too bad of a switch.

Ironically, around D:26 I found the "-3/-4 Cursed halberd of Optimality" which had some rather crap properties on it, but had to laugh at finding two randarts with the same title in the same exact game

My SpEn (Ash) has found Zonguldrok from his wizlab (I'm thinking this is worse than my distortion dagger, but I'm being stubborn and trying to make it work - surely I can raise stabbing enough to get my gibs back).

My DEFE (Sif) has found Jihad for $600 in the orcish mines. This is perhaps more useful, though without clarity I'm tempted to switch to Ashenzari.

Since Zonguldrok recurses this isn't precisely a sustainable strategy if you're switching a lot.

Zonguldrok is not that good, and definitely not for stabbing or for spriggans.

Southpaw probably meant "Never use-ID artifact weapons", meaning, never use them in combat in order to find out their enchantment levels, especially at low levels of the relevant skill. This is sage counsel.

Why would artifact weapons be distinct from non-artifacts in that regard? Any new weapon can be crappy without you knowing it.

Exactly. It's unlikely that a hand axe of all things is going to have such godly bonii that make it better than any of the other dozens of axes you find in the game too. The ones you're going to care on a hand axe about are going to identify on first equip.

Largely because of the difference in potential enchantment level for an artifact/non-artifact. I.e. your handaxe on the floor might be a -1 or -2, the artifact could be a -4 or worse.

At sufficiently high enough levels, you "should" be just making a trip to the lair to beat up some plants to ID the bonuses of your weapons anyways

At such high levels, the pluses and minuses on your weapon will never be so crippling that you need to hit a plant to find out what they are.

I forgot that it recurses which makes using it as a switch a very bad idea.

Makes me feel better for all those time that I haven't played a Na and see a barding in early D. Now I can comfort myself by thinking it's just crap like this :).

Acquirement can only give nagas naga bardings or non-barding armour, not centaur bardings.

(something looks weird about that sentence...)

Naga.

Being the wrong type of barding would have technically made it a worse artefact, I suppose. But then the rng would have missed out on giving me that brief moment of hope and excitement before crushing it.

The wrong type of barding would have been better, actually, since wearing that would be strictly worse than not wearing it (except in edge cases like acid damage, I suppose).

From a balance perspective I like that a lot more than some of the just unambiguously great artifacts. For a somewhat squishy mage who is relying on EV or nuking things from a distance, I think that would be quite useful. But it could also be a death sentence if something gets into melee range. Nice.
I've often said that I like really powerful -CAST artifacts (or similar), where the item is great, but might necessitate an altered playstyle, thereby making an interesting dilemma.

Found it on D6 with an Ogre in trunk. Im certain that in proper english it wouldn't have this extra R.

rMut only gives 90% resistance to mutation, so that thing will ruin you if you wield it long enough, regardless of rMut.

The -1 int strikes me as amusing, and makes the armour even better ;) Also, I'm a melee naga of chei, so having blink this early on (found in orc) is considerably earlier than I'll be able to cast it.

Ok, this isn't a unrandart but I think that finding +8,+8 bow of Krishna "Sharnga" speed, dex+3 sinv as a CeHu (!) on D:6 (!!!!) still deserves a mention here! :D

I actually ended up using something very similiar to that, in the end game no less, because I was desperate for the rF+. It was however, a cloak, so I still had melee protection from body armor.

A - the -6 cloak of Circular Logic (worn) {+Rage rF+ rC+ MR Acc+4}
(You bought it in a shop on level 15 of the Dungeon)

This is the way to know the RNG will make sure you die to an imp after plowing through ~15 levels.

I know how much +Contam gives you. Plutonium sword can't even be used as a weapon on switch for any non-trivial fight since you'll quickly hit white/yellow. At some point though, you'll be so mutated that what else can happen, especially if you take the debilitating ones away via Jiyva. It would be an interesting wizmode experiment.

Edit:
Oh, thought of another way to use it via Zin. Sure, everything will be able to hit you easier, but does Zin's protection from mutation give 100% against contamination mutation?

Wouldn't the contamination also cause violent discharges that cause damage?
