Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

I just found this lying on the ground in Pan:
  Code:
k - amulet of Smiaj {Clar rPois rF+ rC++ rN+}

Best amulet I've ever seen, especially since I had very limited fire/cold resistances and I am using lich form, so clarity is the best amulet type for my char anyway.

cerebovssquire wrote:without tons of experience there are good examples of entertaining artefacts in uber_randarts, bad_randarts and even in this thread.

This thread is never going to be too exciting if it's just about: I found something that had a,b,c, and d! There is a finite and definable set of items with the the qualities genered within Crawl (i.e. combinations of rF, rC, *TELE, and the rest) and you could generate a (large) list of all of them without too much difficulty. You could also, given the probabilities of each quality being known and the probability of the total number of qualities being known, populate that list of all possible objects with a probability.

This means that what people are posting here is something saying "In my game there was generated an object with a 1 in 5000 chance of being generated in any given game!" and someone else replying "That's nothing, in my game it was 1 in 20000", etc. For an individual player having a 1 in 20000 (or whatever) object appear is remarkable; on a population level it's nothing special, since in 20000 games (which all the players playing probably get through pretty fast) there's an evens chance of that thing appearing.

The interesting bit in the thread is thus the poster's, and respondents', reflection on whether they regard an item as good or bad, rather than the items themselves.

tl;dr version: when something happens lots of times even unusual events can be expected. What people think about them is more interesting than the things themselves.

Unless it's in the sense of "when was the last time you saw someone wearing armour that awesome? Never? That means you can't see it."

The bardiche of speed:

the +4,+6 bardiche of Subterfuge {speed, rC- Dex+2 Int+2}

This is far and away the best weapon ever. Reaching + finesse + speed = 5 attacks per 10aut.

Despite this, +14 CPA, and the +5,+4 crossbow of Seull (weapon) {elec, rC+}, my MiHu died in Zot:5. I had cleared Zot:5 entirely apart from an Ancient Lich that summoned a tormentor. I decided to be "safe" and teleported rather than try to take them out. I teleported onto a Zot trap in LOS, which paralyzed me. Probably one in a million chance of that happening. Awesome death!

Just picked this up, and had to make sure it wasn't a new unrand:

the +1, +13 sabre of Hatred {god gift, flame, *Tele +Lev rN+ Str+1 Dex+4 Stlth-}

I've been having good luck lately with artefacts in general, "cheers" to the coders if this is a recent change in trunk and not just good ole confirmation bias

EDIT: oh hey how bout that *Tele means 'random teleports,' not 'controlled teleport' :oops:

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Not bad, but as you discovered you'd probably want to wear cTele or stasis with it. +Lev is close to useless is you've got it on a ring, rN+ is useless, Str+1 is useless, and Dex+4... eh, it's a EV point or two I guess. Then you got -Stealth and *tele as your downsides, which can both be either annoying or a hindrance depending on what you're doing.

Good damage, other then that I'd call it junk, though.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Wow, actually a case where MUT doesn't add to the trash, but is actually a tradeoff.
  Code:
E - the ring "Alive" {MUT +Rage rElec rPois EV+5 Int+3 SInv}.

This ring makes its wearer either more or less capable of avoiding attacks,
depending on its degree of enchantment.
It affects your evasion (+5).

It affects your intelligence (+3).
It insulates you from electricity.
It protects you from poison.
It enhances your eyesight.
It lets you go berserk.
It emits mutagenic radiation.

It weighs around 1.0 aum.

It is an ancient artefact.

Cheibriados disapproves of the use of such an item.
You found it in a treasure trove.

Edit: And here's a junk ring of the highest leagues:
  Code:
e - the ring "Yschoihimu" {SustAb -CAST}.

This ring protects its wearer from the loss of their strength, dexterity and
intelligence.

It prevents spellcasting.

It weighs around 1.0 aum.

It is an ancient artefact.
You found it on level 5 of the Elven Halls.

Sustain abilities is already very situational, and -CAST is just horrendous.

Edit: Late edit, not really worth another post.
  Code:
P - the amulet "Tyzoboy" {Spirit Dam+5}.

This amulet makes its wearer less susceptible to external damage, draining
magical power instead. Should the reserves of magic be depleted, the spirit
will fail to provide its protection until more power is available.

It affects your damage-dealing abilities (+5).

It weighs around 1.0 aum.

It is an ancient artefact.
You found it on level 6 of the Pits of Slime.

Stash search prefixes: {artefact} {artifact} {jewellery}

Pretty cool amulet I'd imagine, if you're not a caster that packs a punch.

I had this drop on me on Lair 8 (v.0.9.1) as FeWz of Sif Muna (played as summoner)

N - the amulet of Tuonief (around neck) {rMut rElec rPois MR}

and I wonder if the RNG works in Felids favor for random jewelry stats, since they cannot equip other gear?
(Mebbe wrong thread, but didn´t want to start new thread for this question alone)

It affects your accuracy (+5).
It protects you from fire.
It protects you from cold.
It protects you from poison.
It lets you blink.

[Orc:4] the ring "Methil" {Ice +Rage +Lev rElec MR Stlth+} (643 gold)

I decided this sort of fits in this thread - it's good in some ways, but overall somehow less than the sum of its parts.
It would be for a Fire Elementalist played as a hybrid, so: Ice could be situational for resists; +Rage is useless; +Lev on a ring is all I have; rElec is good but situational; MR is always good; Stlh is ok. But I could imaging getting cornered with the rF- while levitating, so I decided to go with a spellbook containing ignite poison instead. (Spiders, here I come! :idea: )

Edit:
And, wouldn't you know it? I died to Nikola due to lack of rElec... :lol:
(Also with a bunch of really dumb choices too - I had lots of unused ways to save myself.)

Same game, Kirke picked this off the ground and started whacking me with it:
the +8,+7 falchion of Ointment (weapon) {antimagic, +Rage rF+ rC+ Stlth--}

No wonder the birds are angry.

The birds are angry because the pigs are angry?
What made you happy today?

  Code:
y - the ring "Bomaykla" (right hand) {rElec rPois rF+ rC++ MP+9 Stlth++}
   (You found it in Pandemonium)

   [ring of magical power]

   It protects you from fire.
   It greatly protects you from cold.
   It insulates you from electricity.
   It protects you from poison.
   It makes you much more stealthy.

That may be the best ring I have ever found.

Fruden found
n - the war axe of Unreason (weapon) {freeze, +Blink +Rage +Inv rElec rPois Int+3}

A good name for a good set!

Well, this seems to be rather typical of my luck at the moment:
g + the +2 leather armour of Resilience {Str-4 Dex-4 Curse}
