Why? For the most part Randarts are helpful or at the very least harmless. (as long as you have a remove curse scroll)

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

I just got a somewhat-nifty randart ring with +MUT.

If nothing else, it adds to the flavourby gradually increasing my glow - like it's an ancient device that's malfunctioning a bit and giving off magical radiation... poor idiot cave dweller me unable to repair it, still trying to get whatever use I can out of it but having to wrap it in lead foil from time to time so I don't start growing extra eyes.

A very nice sight at a D:5 jewellery shop:

a - [D:5] the ring "Besigeck" {rPois rF+ rC+ rN+ MR Dex+1} (847 gp)

Time to start saving money ...
... and forgive us our YASDs,
As we forgive our developers,
And lead us not into the Abyss,
But deliver us from Sigmund,
For Thine is the Roguelike,
the Orb and the Victory,
now and forever.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

I found the Mace of Variability (http://crawl.chaosforge.org/index.php?title=List_of_unrands#.28up_to.29_.2B16.2C_.2B16_Mace_of_Variability) once early on. Turns out it's not hard to keep it near its max enchantment levels just by walking around with it when the enchantments are low and then unweilding it once they get high.

That was almost as fun as the +8 +8 ring of slaying that my SpEn picked up on L1.

+10, +4 falchion "Daus Bri" (god gift, holy, MR EV+4) on my SPHu.

In case someone doesn't know, the reason this is so sweet is because a falchion is a long blade a Spriggan can use with a buckler. Thank you, Troggy.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Only okay as far as the properties go, but the name is the best part, especially for a stabby Spriggan...

the +1,+6 dagger of Painful Death (weapon) {flame, +Inv MR AC+4 EV+3}

(Although the Spriggan who found it isn't quite as stabby as I usually play, as he's an AE.)

That +Inv could be pretty good for stabbing, and MR AC+4 EV+3 are nothing to sneeze at either! Now if it was electrocution instead of flame...

If I were playing my usual SpEn, this would be infinity minus one (yeah, I'd love electrocution or pain on it). But it's a SpAE wielding it, so going for the stab on a regular basis is like sticking a bayonet on a sniper rifle. The +Inv does save a bunch of spell slots, though.

(I just looted this from Elf:7 a couple hundred turns ago, so I haven't realized its full potential yet.)

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Holy crap!

I've recently discovered with a halfling of okawaru that a weapon of speed + might = really really good - getting that +1d10 damage on so many hits per turn makes it an extremely competitive weapon!

So dagger of speed, +9 to damage from enchantment and basically +11 to damage from berserk, times the speed brand and the haste effect of Rage, is roughly like a +5 executioner's axe hitting five times / turn, and much more accurate to boot.

According to my spreadsheet, that dagger with 2 levels in fighting and 3 levels in short blades (typical for a starting character) while berserk would do average 35.5 damage per turn to Sigmund. An executioners axe with 3 levels in axes and NOT berserk would do average of 3.3 per turn (berserked, 9.6). And then rPois and rElec thrown in to boot...

Well I just saw the following lovely Wand of Braining in a shop on Elf:7:

a - the +0,+5 giant club "Skullcrusher" {speed, Str+5}

Not much use to my Spriggan Venom Mage though...

For this message the author danr has received thanks:

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

I really cannot decide between these artifacts that I have for my current game, a DeWz. Any thoughts on what is the best one? I personally like the helmet.

the +5,+7 dagger of Chilly Death (quivered) {freeze, rPois rF- rC++ MR}
the +27, -1 knife of Accuracy
the +4 skin of Zhor (worn) {rC++}
the +5 helmet of Filth (worn) {rF++ Int+2 Stlth+}
the +5 pair of gloves of Pragmatism (worn) {rF+}
the +3 cloak "Tudalex" (worn) {rElec rC++}
the ring "Koiculeff" (left hand) {EV+3 Str+3 Int+5 Acc+2}

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

I love getting items that go above their normal enchantment levels. I can't believe you have so many pieces like that--you're just missing some boots.

This is the only good randart I have so far in my game, DSCK:

the +8,+10 dire flail of Miwoaw (weapon) {drain, MR}

I wish it had some more bonuses, but I kill things quite easily with it.

Drain reduces the amount of XP you get from kills so you might find yourself levelling more slowly.

It's subjective, but I think it is. It really adds up. If Ashenzari's exp bonus is broken in a helpful way, then the draining brand is inversely horrible.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. But I've yet to find any other weapons that are even comparable (I have a +1 +4 mace of protection), so I'd rather kick butt than die.

Best: Off of a scroll of acquirement, I got the +5, +5 demon whip of the Savior{vamp, rElec, rC+, Stlth++}. And, I'm playing a DeFi that has been using Maces & Flails since first level.

Worst: -5 Plate Mail of Hadjma {God Gift, Str -3, Dex +3, Int +3}. Thanks Oka, I use strength as my main stat. Thank you very much.

The worst artifact is no artifact at all. I've got little Grimmy to XL 15 and all he's got is a +0, +1 dwarven war axe. Oka's been dropping bolts only and nothing else has shown up.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Ahh hahaha...

after saving up all my gold and buying the +1 Buckler of Ashenzari's Anger {rElec, +2 Dex} purely because I had no source of rElec (no Shields skill either) and was having Nikola issues on Swamp:1 (to go with my Mennas issue on Snake:1, it's a good day to be in the dungeon), I literally five minutes later found this on the ground:

The Amulet of Wishful Thinking {Faith +Rage rElec Str+3 Stlth++}

Sneaky-uppy shockproof berserking Sludge Elf with a +4 Quarterstaff of Speed? Ya, you betcha.

I'm gonna kill that zap-happy little geek so hard...

This is a pretty nice fixedart to find in a shop with a Halfing Hunter, for 243 GP:

The Captain's Cutlass, a +6,+7 sabre of speed (DAM +3)

Seems weird to have a slaying bonus on a weapon, but whatev. Pretty happy with that as a short blade.

Totaly worth the gold got this unrand from Trog in lair and used it till the end since its 1 handed for spriggan (think halfling and kobold too) unlike katana. 8-)

It is a great weapon. The KoBe I ascended the other day used it as is main weapon though pan and the hells. Even one shot stabbed Asmodeus with it.

During the last tournament, one of my MfCr found this
"+6,+4 katana of Hyrhaq {flame, +Blink rC++ rN+ AC+3 SInv Stlth++}"

Said MfCr got chain paralyzed and clubbed to death by an ogre mage.

Or stacks upon stacks of nearly useless exploding bullets.

Me? Bitter from that?

Nah, the gift of two poisoned darts is what made me bitter (Never has a +7 modified aptitude in throwing been more annoying).
