Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

This was a very fortuitous find for my VpIE of Kiku the +3,+3 flail of Righteous Fury (weapon) {pain, -TELE +Rage rF++ rC+ Str+3 Int+3}. This plus my innate resistances gets me to max rF, rC, and rN and I am only level 12. Also I am training up necro, so a pain brand is always very welcome. No teleportation kind of sucks, but I guess I have bat form for escapes, or I could just unwield it.

Haven't posted here in forever, but today I came across this:

the -10 chain mail "Jafok" {rF+ rC+ MR}

I was so excited to find a glowing chain mail on D6 for my DeBe, too...

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

This is a interesting artifact.
  Code:
The +1 +3 glaive of the Fulmar.{venom, rElec str +2 int +2

It would make a decent early weapon for a caster because of the int boost, venom and rElec. However it isn't all that good for killing things. I would use it considering where I found it, D:5, if I wasn't a unarmed spriggan. (I know that's a odd combo.)
A image of it.

It's really sad when you find armour with good resist and bad AC.

But sometimes, and only sometimes something good can appear too:

the +8 splint mail of the Stars (worn) {rElec rF++ rC+ Str+3 Int+3}

Who's saying that splint mail is not a good armour? :D

For me, it's usually the first res I try to get - it lets you cast mephitic cloud on range 1, helps a lot in tight spots.

rPois isn't useful, simply because you can cure poison with the most common potion in the game. And you aren't going to be casting mephitic cloud in plate in the early game when mephitic cloud is most useful.

You aren't likely to cast mephitic cloud (or any other spell) if you're wearing that plate armour. (At least, not on D:5).

Because the ring cancelled the Dam -4 out. That's the point of that image there.

I also find rPois and rElec useful, and frankly just like using as many artefacts as I can. I play very suboptimally for fun's sake.

Anyway that guy's long since six feet under.

Is there a category for best named randart?

the cursed +2, -4 falchion of Bread (slice, Hunger rC+)

It's made of bread, it slices things (or it is a slice of bread?) and it causes hunger. You just keep drooling over this yummy slice of bread that you can't eat because if you did then you wouldn't have a weapon anymore!

And um, it makes you feel less cold. Dunno, you burn your calories for heat energy or something :P

It's warm bread. Toasty, forever warm to the touch bread. Eternally fresh from the oven- fixed that way by virtue of being an artefact.

Which makes it smell eternally delicious. Of course you can't eat it (the same danged artefact permanency makes it forever delicious and unattainably inedible at the same time. Curses!), which is what triggers the hunger.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Not really.

The problem I had was, I had my three runes, felt like I was not ready for the Orb but also felt like I wasn't ready for Slime, Tomb, Pan or Hell. I lost 2 1/2 levels to stupid drains in Elf:5 and never really recovered - I was taking on Zot:5 at level 22. I really didn't know where to go, so I just tried abusing Scry and see if I could manipulate my way through Zot to get the Orb and then just run like hell. No dice.

It didn't; rather, I would guess players' perceptions of what is very good or bad varies according to their level of experience. Non-snarky pointers about what is good or bad from our experienced counsellors are, of course, always welcome. :)

In any case, this is CYC. Anything goes.

Because the usefulness of artifacts is on a bell curve. You don't have many completely horrid artifacts, you have a good number of bad, but not ctrl+q worthy artifacts, you have a large number of artifacts that are good, but not amazing and then you have don't have very many artifacts that make you win the game right then and there.

In fact perspectives differ. This "random artefact" from your point of view after thousands of games, happens for me to be the first one without any negative drawbacks. Hence my post in this thread "Best/Worst Artefacts".
If you need to have played hundreds of games, or if you need to be one of your club (i tought every DCSS player had the possibility to post there), or if you need to haunt this forum 10 hours a day to discern the faint quirk in a thread name before posting, then i'm really sorry to have disturbed the assembly.

apology accepted

Seriously: don't take my last post so seriously, and even though it was done quoting you it was in no way a personal attack but more against the general tendency of this thread to be not very entertaining lately... this is no matter of elitism of my own experience with artefacts (I don't think I even found very many exceptional ones... can't remember a single one), without tons of experience there are good examples of entertaining artefacts in uber_randarts, bad_randarts and even in this thread.
