With all these nice properties it would free up some rings slots though (for instance he could fight OOF with slaying rings instead of rF) - not that it matters for a transmuter.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Bought this for 10gp:

  Code:
 C - the +0 robe of the Hunter {Str-3 Dex-2}
   (You bought it in a shop in a bazaar)

   It affects your strength (-3).
   It affects your dexterity (-2).

I'm sure with those stats this one is a favorite among serious hunters..... it makes the hunt more challenging, hence more exciting!

Gah, I almost got that deer, but my fingers slipped because of the weight of my bow!

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Speaking of worst artifacts, is it just me or are unidentified artifacts sold in shops uncommonly weighted towards being cursed pieces of garbage? I get 50/50 luck with unidentified branded/ego'd weapons/armor, but if its white? I would swear im batting something like 1 for 100 with regards to it being even close to wearable.

Just got me a -3 cloak of DIE NOOB (rF -), im going to stop throwing my money at these things. Every. single. time.

It's not weighted any different than any other randart as far as I know. You just notice it more because you spent money on it.

I really can't see why it has to be like that, because all it does is cause frustration and amplify the over-confidence effect (and stretches out the "getting past it" part of it) of getting a sweet, sweet randart.
Exactly just because it happens so damn infrequently that you actually want to have fun with it.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Sometimes RNG is not such a bad guy.

On my kobold assassin: I cleared down to D12 and found lair, orc, and hive (on 9.0). I have yet to find a decent weapon, but ive got Poison Resistance so I cleared Hive. The vault is across the lake and I have no fire wands or magic, no levitation or flight, no digging. Hrmm.. Go back up to lair to clear the first couple levels, hoping I dont find any hydras (still no flaming brands as usual and zero good wands, ouch), figuring I will drop my stash and see if the first couple levels of orc turn up any decent weapons. Then I find this on Lair(2)

  Code:
 the +9 +9 dagger "Xekah" {slay orc +Blink +Inv +Lev rPois rN+}

Guess I can get into the hive vault now, right after I mutilate a few hundred orcs.

EDIT: A few spiny frogs down the hall from that one, I found this:

  Code:
 the -2 +11 dagger "Seliruh" {freeze +Rage rPois rN+ SInv}

Choices choices choices. At least I can switch out my rage amulet now, provided I ever find another amulet that is.

Obliviously, found by my OgNE, with already 22 in M&f and a pain Gsc :roll:
Dammit, I should stop to identify potential awesome randart useless to current character, I'm almost thinking to leave all other skills untrained, and get this blade to min delay :|

The title of this one amuses me:

U - the +8,+1 halberd of Sunlight {vamp, rPois MR}
(You found it on level 3 of the Elven Halls)

It inflicts no extra harm, but heals its wielder somewhat when it strikes a
living foe.

It protects you from poison.
It increases your resistance to enchantments.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

On a promising Minotaur berserker, I found a nice vampiric halberd before the Lair. A halberd wasn't my preferred type of weapon, but it worked very nicely. I just found myself wishing "if only it was a glaive." So, while clearing Orc, I ran across this:

"the +2, +8 glaive of Fortitude {vamp, rElec Str +1}"

I was ecstatic, and started using it as soon as I had the proper skill. It served me very well. I found myself thinking, "I think only some amazing bardiche could get me to give this up." So, Trog decided to send me this:

"the +8, +7 bardiche of Trog's Displeasure {god gift, flame, rF++, Int+3}"
Won Offline: NaFE(3), MiBe(3), HEIE(3), DsCj(3), MfSk(4), MfSk(15), DsIE(15).

I play online at crawl.s-z.org as Lyfon. There I have won: MfGl(15), NaTm(15), HEIE(15), HaAK(6), and NaDK(3).

Not really best or worst artifacts but I was impressed to deal with Crazy Yiuf (may his name live forever) and find in his grotto not just a bunch of junk hammers but:

the +11, +11 morningstar "Eos" [elec, -Tele rElec SInv}

AND

the +6, +4 hammer of Oneloir [flame, +Inv rN+ Dex+4]

Usually he seems to hoard mostly a lot of crap - I don't remember coming across him with even one artifact before, never mind two.

Ah, but they can.

Rule: There are exceptions to every rule

Or even:

Rule: There is an exception to this rule.

Of course, in that case it disproves the rule too, so *shrugs*. There's no limit to the conditions you can make hold with sufficient metacity.
