Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

Probably Wyrmbane. It's a lance, which isn't a terribly strong weapon. It's base stats are 8 damage and +4 accuracy, but when you find it, it's enchanted to +9, +6. This is pretty good as it is, but when every time you kill a dragon, draconian, or anything vulnerable to the "dragon slaying" brand, you receive a +1, +1. You can keep doing this until eventually it caps out at +18, +18. Not only is that insanely high, but the weapon also comes with Dragon Slaying, rF+, rPois, +5 AC and it allows you to go berserk. It was an amazing weapon that I forced myself to train Polearms for. Some people don't like it because its base stats are pretty low, but I think that is offset by how fantastic the enchants are, plus it worked marvelously for my character who didn't want to invest a bunch in melee. I was using a DDNe and after getting Wyrmbane, the rest of the run was remarkably easy.

Re: Best/Worst Artifacts

This run has been particularly ridiculous
I've found both the ring of shaolin (+8 EV) AND the ring of robustness (+8 AC)
Well then I find this beauty:
the ring "Hiroac" (rF++ rC+ EV+3)

Earlier I found this nifty dagger on sale for 1549 gold (which I bought obviously):
+5+9 dagger of tortfeasance (freeze, +inv rElec rF++ rN+) - note, I bought this before I found the amazing ring
Then on the same floor, I find the +5 shield of resistance (rF+ rC+ MR)

Yes, I know the shield and rings are unrandarts, it's just weird to find so many on the same run.

+ 15 plate armour of Disaster {rF+ rC++}. Too bad I'm already rocking a 70 AC naga with + 14 vanilla crystal plate and good resists. This may be worth the switch however, if I can free up some ring slots for slaying though.

Your naga should only lose about 2AC if you switch, and if you've put enough xp into dodging or magic skills to see a return on the crystal plate, you'll see even more of those returns from the artefact plate because the penalty is so much lower. Seems to be clearly worth it to me, even ignoring resistance juggling.

But it kills you strength and stealth, making it useless to both stabbers and heavy armour fighter types!

-1 strength is probably not a game-changer so ought not to turn off your typical heavily armoured fighter; even the possible marginal effect should be easily overcome.

I'm sorry, I should have elaborated a bit on this, it was meant to express wonder because I'm aware of the bonus/malus of an IDA. I'm curious as to whether an IDA randart can attain a rC- all the way from rC++ (and the exact opposite for rF-/++).

I don't think so. The highest boost possible in a randart is rF/C++. And I don't think you can get even two levels of malus.

Indeed. Rather, exceptions proof the rule. That is to say that exceptions test the rule.

When one states, "Octopodes can't drink potions while Necromutation is in effect," that is a stated exception. Stating it like that proves that Octopodes are expected to be able to drink potions when Necromutation is not in effect. Similarly, a sign stating "No one under 18 admitted" can reasonably be interpreted to mean that those over 18 are admitted. That's the idea that "The exception proves the rule" refers to. It's not about unlikely outcomes reinforcing the probability of likely outcomes.

I had thought like Jabbers, taking "prove" in its sense of "test" as in "bulletproof" and "proving grounds", until your post led me to read up on it. I was unaware of the source in Cicero. You are correct sir.
