The Mouse?

How many of you play with the mouse? I know the mouse isn't available online, but having originally played offline, I cannot break the habit of using the mouse. It's bad, it leads to annoying missed clicks and even deaths because of them. But I can't stop; it is the primary reason I don't play online. Please tell me I'm not the only mouse using motherfucker out there.

Also, how do you crawlers place your hands when you play? Since I use the mouse, obviously one hand goes there. The left hand is placed over IOP so I can auto-fight, auto-explore and Pray without much effort.

Re: The Mouse?

I typically have both hands on the home row keys. I use the keys "hjklyubn" to move about; It's a little hard to get used to at first, but I think it's ultimately a bit easier on the wrists. I used the Numpad exclusively for the longest time though.
Won Offline: NaFE(3), MiBe(3), HEIE(3), DsCj(3), MfSk(4), MfSk(15), DsIE(15).

I play online at crawl.s-z.org as Lyfon. There I have won: MfGl(15), NaTm(15), HEIE(15), HaAK(6), and NaDK(3).

Re: The Mouse?

I honestly have no idea how anyone could play this with the mouse as a primary input. Once you force yourself to learn the hotkeys, play is so much faster, smoother. That goes for any program, honestly.

Re: The Mouse?

I use the mouse to pick consumables a lot of the time, but only because I let the auto-sort do my inventory for me in many cases. I always put blood potions on "q" for a vampire, as an example of when i don't buy into that. It is much easier to do things with the hotkeys. Other than that, I only use the mouse to look around areas of the floor map I'm not on.

EDIT: It's not actually any harder to pick out a consumable using the hotkeys, I just grew used to picking them from my inventory with the mouse via tiles, so I still do it.

Re: The Mouse?

I use mouse for almost everything. Yes, that includes casting spells, exploring dungeon and swapping items. Though I try to create useful macros (F1 = za., F3 = ff, F5 = ce). Still it takes huge amount of real time for me to complete a game.

Edit: I use keyboard only for tab, o, p, i, ',', 5, '.', d, r, q, Ctrl+F, Shift+X, Ctrl+G and dropping limited number of items (there is no way to do the latter with mouse)

Re: The Mouse?

I use the mouse as well. I use an old laptop without a numpad, so that practically settles it (the movement keys yasderfgt are a joke).

I once tried playing online. I tied for half an hour - of which there were probably 5 minutes of actual playtime, the rest was spent trying to figure out how to move, how to manage items, how to memorize spells etc. In the end I gave up, naturally.

A side note: the game has a well functioning, good looking, user-friendly version for download, so why do they use that terrible mutant for online play? The only logical explanation is that they try to frighten off new players, because the servers are already overloaded.

That's definitely not true. I received very good answer for my questions regarding online playing in Technical Support forum.

Re: The Mouse?

I used to play with the mouse a lot when I was a noob, heck, my first win was without knowing about autofight on a HoFi!!! I always clicked to move and attack. That playstyle probably helped me survive a lot, I think, but is terribly slow. That win took like 8 hours or so. Nowadays my runs are full of o and tab. I stopped even picking items with the mouse or using them from the inventory, I just do that with the commands, it's really easy and fast once you get used to it. Only time I use the mouse is to spam-click on Sultanas/Grapes instead of e/(corresponding letter) spam! My wins now take about 2-2.5 hours.

I play console and don't use the mouse. I generally have one hand over the numrow and one over the arrows keys for moving (yes, this is really weird) and use the right hand for autoexplore, my prayers are automated, and the left hand for pretty much everything else if I don't need Shift for it.

Sometime in local tile to manage my inventory, never use the mouse otherwise.

As you read the scroll, it crumbles to dust.

That's my spam wand of flame/frost button. You do need to say "pew pew pew" when you do it though.

I'm talking about english, not french. Don't sound the same anything alike in french unless the speaker is mumbling.
