There is this thing called an out of depth timer. The longer you hang out on a floor the more likely it is that some really high level critter will appear, the chance starts after a small delay, and is very very small, but will grow over the next 10000 turns or so.

You had spent about 3000 turns on d2. You should try to get off a level in less than 1500 (ideally less than 1000)

This explains the deep troll, but it doesn't explain how kroki managed to spend 3000 turns on d:2 with DDEE

The three "A goblin is nearby!" warnings, along with the turncount, suggest that '5' was being pressed repeatedly. Either kroki didn't know that Deep Dwarfs don't heal on rest (and after 254 posts, that's unlikely) or this opportunity for the screenshot was being created. And I have to confess I've also been curious just how OOD are the monsters that start showing up when you linger on a floor.

Try a scummy mummy and you'll see. Sometimes the first OoD monster you see on D:1 is a fire giant.

I have to confess there was one time I actually forgot I was playing a deep dwarf and wasnt paying lots of attention, and hit 5 several times before it clicked that it wasn't working. Not saying that is what happened in this case, but I could see it maybe happening...

On the topic of the completely ridiculous, you'll find an excellent and fair encounter with a brimstone fiend by feeding "!lg zooty TrWn 1 -tv:<T34100:>>" to Sequell.
