From Canada? That doesn't seem like a good idea to me. (Even if it would make Canada less tedious)

Live results here as they are reported: http://www.cbc.ca/includes/federalelect ... index.html

I didn't vote, but don't panic, I'm american. Not sure why I follow canadian politics so much, but hey, I agree, stop harper. Looks like liberals are going to take it - they're even predicting a majority, which would be great. Still a chance they don't quite make it, it's pretty close.

The other two—age and income—have little effect on economic beliefs.

Though it sounds naive to count on the affluent to look out for the interests of the needy, that is roughly what the data advise. All kinds of voters hope to make society better off, but the well educated are more likely to get the job done. Selective turnout widens the gap between what the public gets and what it wants. But it narrows the gap between what the public gets and what it needs.

luckily the liberals have promised voting reform, so p and B should increase substantially, and also c is 0 because your employers are legally mandated to give you paid time off to go vote

p is in fact the probability that my vote is the single deciding vote and thus usually very small. Need a heckuva reform to increase it. c is also never 0 because it's in terms of utility and there's a substantial cost associated with learning anything about politics (as opposed to voting randomly which I don't think you're recommending)--id rather dream about sexy elves or any elves, or telling duvessa about my dreams, for that matter.

Re: friendly reminder to vote if you're canadian

The thing is, I've always felt that voting is fun. You just take a stroll on a nice Sunday morning (or afternoon, whichever you prefer), cast your vote in a couple of minutes, talk for another minute with the members of the committee sitting there, and it's done.

If the value of c in the equation is negative (meaning that voting is not a cost, but something pleasant), the whole "nobody should vote" argument collapses.

Also, imagine a same argument for a sports event. p is the probability of your voice changing the outcome of the match, and c is the cost of going to the stadium. This shows how absurd the whole argument is.

In my case, c is negative. I get paid a couple packs of cigarettes for voting correctly, and my time is worth about zero dollars an hour. So voting is really a no brainer.

Re: friendly reminder to vote if you're canadian

Voting reform primarily changes p, because it fixes the situation where certain offices are arranged such that it's extremely unlikely for the match to be upset. It doesn't change B much; the net value of getting a more preferred candidate in can't be affected directly by voting reform (though it can make more candidates viable, one of whom might represent your interests better...)

And c can be positive or negative; in the end, the best way to get people to vote is the same as the best way to get social animals to do anything enmasse; make it a social activity. For me it used to be quite negative (ie, an enjoyable experience) but the last 4-5 years I've come to start cutting out excessive stressors and whatnot that don't actually benefit me. And quite honestly, keeping up on politics doesn't benefit me at all. It's mostly a disillusioning experience about my countrymen... ;)

You know, you'd think Canadians would have learned their lesson from the last time they had a PM named Trudeau. But seeing as there are major American candidates named Bush and Clinton, I guess we can't throw stones.
