If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

RPS lists DCSS in 50 Best Free PC Games

Rock Paper Shotgun ran a piece today titled 'The 50 Best Free Games On PC.' DCSS came in at only #32, but it's appropriately described: "Stone Soup is one of the best traditional roguelikes in existence."

Hells yeah.

I've only played a handful of the games in the top 20 of that list, but for my money Crawl is better than all of them

No Iji? Ehhh.

@chequers: it's interesting that you mentioned Spelunky as a roguelike but not Desktop Dungeons...

How the actual fuck is Cave Story not on that list?

Spelunky is a better game than Crawl, no contest, sorry y'all.

(I also think Crawl's a better "game" than Dwarf Fortress and a more satisfying roguelike than all the others on the list, but hey.)

Cave Story should definitely be there. Kind of insulting tbh.

- no cave story
- no iji
- no la-mulana
- no untitled story
- knytt

my theory is the author is really bad at platformers with metroidvania elements

that, or you totally missed the point of the article

How is "move-s-move-s etc...", the game, above Crawl? Even though Crawl has problems and is too easy it should be ranked above Brogue.

Well, I'm yet to play a free game better than Crawl, or probably even any game. I like reading RPS but my list would look very different to that.

@tabstorm: Brogue feels really amazing when you don't have much experience with it. If I played a couple of hours of Brogue and a couple of hours of Crawl (which is probably more than whoever wrote that article did), I'd probably pick Brogue over Crawl as well.

Oh, that makes so much sense, now!

Because seriously, DCSS is way too low on this list. The balance and depth of this game is ridiculously amazing.

Spelunky is really good. I have no idea how you rank-order Dwarf Fortress and basically any other game; it's like trying to fit "bagel with lox and cream cheese" in the list.

Dwarf fortress is !fun!. Seriously, it's like it naturally attracts all the idea and concepts that get culled from crawl, sometimes before they even happen, and concentrates them in a giant spoilery ball of obfuscated tedium. Instead of just hunger, maybe we should implement hunger-induced sadness spirals of doom, all started because you ran out of cranberry syrup, and while there was plenty of raspberrys to make into new syrup, raspberrys taste like crap...

DCSS is also seriously lacking in the booze department compared to DF.

Oh, DF is amazing. But it isn't *like* basically any other game, so it's hard for me to think of a rank ordering with it and anything else.

So I didn't go over every page, but from what I can gather no one actually had a completely working mermaid farming system going - some people did trap them, but having a method to selectively kill only children/retrieve bones seems like it was never completed? And the more recent patches made them unbutcherable and the bones aren't worth unusually high amounts of money anymore, either...

Spelunky doesn't deserve the top spot because Tastes Like Spelunky is a better game.

Re: RPS lists DCSS in 50 Best Free PC Games

It should have been titled 'random PC games', really. Some like Spelunky, Brogue, DCSS are very good, others are mediocre. I don't think there's any outrageously terrible ones listed, but there are some bizarre ones (ZangbandTK, that was last updated in 2005, and whose link doesn't even relate to ZangbandTK but Zangband. Seriously; list Angband instead if you're gonna do that.)

la-mulana doesn't cost money any more than spelunky does...
