when i learned old death channel for the first time i was excited to get a permanent lernaean hydra ally so i went to swamp:5 (i had parked it there already) and killed it. then i realized that you had to cast death channel before killing the monster, not after killing it like every other necromancy spell

Well it was also level 9 (or level 8 for a couple of versions), and so on balance probably still "not very good".

Didn't Yred's Enslave sometimes give you a horked version of a monster's soul if your invo wasn't high enough, too?

I know it makes me a little sad inside.

Even not taking them with me it was still rediculous. I almost couldn't get into combat, by the time I got to enemies they were dead, I sort of just walked around looking for the rune while things died all around me occasionally casting cig's embrace just to do something with all the corpses.

I love steamrolling necromancers at Sbranch endings. Death Channel + Regen + Sublimation of Blood is fun.
