When I first started playing crawl, I was disappointed that I couldn't defile other gods' altars. What about this-

I remember that proposal. It was...interesting flavour-wise but didn't sound like it added anything but tedium gameplay-wise. Seemed like it would just make it less desirable. I don't remember.

I'm not a fan of this. It's the same as selling: you lose something that's otherwise worthless to you and get a benefit. What are you giving up in exchange for this bonus piety? Nothing. You don't even have to give up the option to switch religions, because you just don't sacrifice the altars you're considering using.

How about this: Destroying another altar gains you piety and "indulgences" which allow the god to look the other way when you would otherwise do an action resulting in penance. I'm guessing.. 3 indulgences per altar destroyed, yeah To curb abuse, you would get less piety per use. Paladins don't get to do this, though.

Well to be fair, you are losing a certain degree of survivability by taking on additional risk in the form of the toned down wrath, assuming its actually an interesting decision level of risk that is..
