Zero-damage challenge

The challenge: make it as far as possible in the game without taking damage, except for self-inflicted damage. Self-inflicted damage is allowed because I can't imagine any way to win the game this way without ddoor.

My theory is a DDNe rushing to ddoor asap would have the best chances. So far my best is xl5.

DEFE I think would have the best chances, kill everything before it can reach you in early/mid game...
I'm beginning to feel like a Cat God! Felid streaks: {FeVM^Sif Muna, FeWn^Dithmenos, FeAr^Pakellas}, {FeEE^Ashenzari, FeEn^Gozag, FeNe^Sif Muna, FeAE^Vehumet...(ongoing)}

You think his chances would be better than a Centaur throwing things would be? (Or I guess spriggan)

I imagine the chance of successfully doing this without rigging the RNG is so absurdly low that if you were to do this until heat death of the universe you'd never make it close.

Consider that on the Orb Run you could just be on D4 and an orc priest could wander into LOS, smite from energy randomization while Deaths Door isn't on, and end your run.

If you manage to get to that point though, make sure to let me know when so I can watch.

Re: Zero-damage challenge

SpEn seems the obvious choice. Since you cannot take damage, HP is irrelevant, though AC isn't (hmmm...). Speed will help, and stealth as well. Centaur might also work well.

I'd think a summoner would be the best choice. Let your summons do all the fighting.

Re: Zero-damage challenge

I can't imagine this is in any way doable. A ranged monster could always wander into view and attack on the same turn, then it's just a dice roll whether you take damage or not.

Better be stealthy, then. Being a DD helps since their damage reduction reduces the chance that thrown stones will damage you. DD damage shaving also means bats are harmless, and lets you take one level of poison without taking damage (happened to me twice in the game I'm playing now).

The first part of the challenge would be to make it to lair without taking damage, with some attack capable of killing black mambas before they can hit you. Then there's a lot of easier XP since most things in lair are not ranged.

Some options for attacks that can kill black mambas without taking damage: summonings, high power fireball, a wall of zombies with kiku, confusion + weaker ranged attack.

Kiku is maybe the best god because you're guaranteed a necronomicon (if you can make it back to an altar, that is!) Chei would be good for casting high level spells sooner but requires you to get lucky and find a necronomicon. Possibly Fedhas would be good, since you could set up a wall of oklobs and just wait in a lair level for them to kill things. The danger there would be invisible OOD spawns.

The next part of the challenge would be to scum lair for enough XP for ddoor.

Then it's on to the rest of the game. Ashenzari or antennae would help out since you could detect monsters and cast ddoor before they enter LOS.

Re: Zero-damage challenge

I don't think you could win a game like this (game is too long - it would get tedious fast, but what do I know - people do pacifist extinctionist runs in nethack). But it might be a good challenge to see how far you can go. One could have 2 metrics: most floors seen and highest XL.

Re: Zero-damage challenge

Question: Is there an rcfile setting where I can easily check whether the monster hit damaged me. I remember some sort of setting saying: "you take x damage" or something like that.

Re: Zero-damage challenge

You can put:
hp_warning = 100
which will print * * * LOW HITPOINT WARNING * * * whenever you get damaged below 100%.

You can also put:
note_hp_percent = 100
which will put a note in your game log whenever you get damaged below 100%.
