Fucking shadow traps

After losing a good char in Zot:5 I tried to get a nice and easy combo going, a HuFi, you know, shield and an early plate. Three of those have died due to a fucking shadow trap. There's nothing better than proceeding cautiously and getting stuck between an adder and an ogre with a GSC. Those traps must be the fucking stupidest thing anybody ever envisioned. Why?

If you're not gonna compile trunk yourself, I don't really see why you would have the git repo on your HDD?
After all, if you want to know what is happening in trunk, you can just check out https://github.com/crawl/crawl/commits/master

I downloaded it to do some code diving. No reason I wouldn't compile a playable game out of it.

So, I was cruising Lair 7 as a Kobold with a crossbow. I step on a shadow trap. I wish I'd take a screenshot, but to summarise: I was surrounded by yaks and elephants. They were 2-3 ranks deep (no two steps got me out), and just to cap it off there was a torpor snail in the second row.

Shadow traps were only dangerous or interesting on early dungeon levels, which they had already been removed from, leaving them only on levels where they were pointless (like the rest of the traps). I don't know if this is why they were totally removed but it's my guess.
