If you want the most&best possible choices for starting weapon, pick Fighter or Gladiator.

Yes, it would make them stronger, and they're already the strongest background. A -1 qs is still better than a hand axe in most respects, and the idea of starting with -x weapons is aesthetically unpleasing.

You should allow training of skills that crosstrain with things in your inventory, then a club or spear would be like a crappy staff that gets better as you improve staves.

You can actually make spears better by training polearms

Problem is I'm already garunteed 17 int by Xl 24 starting as a Be with no level up points assigned to int, and only having 12 str to start on a trogolite doesn't excite me...

It wasn't falchion-tier. It was club-tier. There was no reason to ever use it.
