I like the idea, but I don't think you need throw out diagonal movement entirely. This would make my killholes that I use to kill really tough monsters like d:1 gnolls with halberds much harder. What you should do is have "up left" be the diagonal to go up and left, so if you type u, you move up, but then if your next command is l, it undoes the step up, and then moves you ul (up-left) instead. So this second step is really just one move and doesn't take any additional time. Any damage you took moving up is undone when you moved upleft, making it possible to learn from your mistakes!

that would make it impossible to move in right angles. or left angles.

Simple solution: remove movement.
