Tasonir's list of guides/resources

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

Tasonir's list of guides/resources

So I am tired of losing the link to various things and having to search for them, so I thought I'd make a post with links. Feel free to suggest any other useful posts you like, but I'm mostly just doing this for my future reference so I can just bookmark one post.

Berder's streakability charts

Tactics:
Berder's tactics guide:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16109

Patashu's tactics guide:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12062&p=168952#p168952\

And the ghost spoiler guide: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4653

My own attempt to include some more stategy advice packaged with patashu's guide: (still would need a good bit more editing to really have much value)
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12240

strength, int, and spell success:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16645

tasonir transmuter guide:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=20546

I'd be interested in character guides, mechanic guides (I've been meaning to write one on unarmed vs weapons for ages, but never have the time/energy/motivation), etc.

Some of the less bad character guides:

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Elynae%27s_ ... uter_guide Possibly fairly outdated by now, but I don't think much has changed (obviously it's only for merfolk now, rip sludge elves) but elynae is a good player and generally wise enough to leave the guide appropriately vague.

http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Tasonir%27s ... Naga_Guide (no bias, of course :P)

Aside from those two it looks like the current (ie, version .16) guides are mostly berder and Majang's, but I haven't yet read through them. Majang's caster guide is practically a book, coming in at 135k (my naga guide is 15k for comparison). So dunno if I'm going to be reading that in full...Any other guides that should be included?

And the $64 question: what aspects of crawl aren't covered in the above that should be? Skill training is briefly in my attempt, but maybe some sort of general strategic development of characters (train killdudes, train not dying to dudes, train support magic), and a brief breakdown of items (consumable use, light vs heavy armor, etc)?

Additional topics to discuss:
noise mechanics
Considering max damage/worst case scenario as a survival tool

Tasonir's intended list of future character ideas:

Need some new ideas.
Actually win a spriggan statue form monk?
Troll of Gozag. - had 8 rations + other food on join, had 11 rations on first call merchant (ate other food), picked armor instead of food
Mummy or demonspawn summoner who primarily uses haunt - other summons allowed if haunt lacks DPS.

Semi-completed - got decently far, didn't terribly care for it:
Tr(Mo/Fi/Hu)^Ash, with statue form, possibly haste later.

Completed:
DDNE^Chei. Use vamp draining for healing, and get to play a DD with Chei. This should be somewhat easier.
Op(something) ^ Gozag. Still haven't used gozag ever, get to use call jewelery shop. This is very challenging all the way up to mid game.
Staff of earth minotaur.

After winning anything, attempt to streak transmuters.

Old elemental race proposal:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=14798&p=203248

Update this was more modern version of selecting facets as you level, not being a single type of elemental.

Skill training as a caster. Skill training for pure melee is a lot eisier because you have less skills to train and offence/defence are a bit flexible: if you have 50 ac, 40 ev, 40 sh, and 250 hp you can probably kill a lot of things with an unenchanted hand axe. Conversliy, your defence don't have to be quite as good if you have a +12 ex axe of speed with str+9 and int +4 and min delay.

This reply to Berder's tactics post is interesting too, if you want to add it.

I would be cautious about following this strategy guide. As Pollen_Golem mentioned, strategy must be adjusted to character, branch order, game goal, item findings etc. Some of advices posted by Berder are not explained sufficiently; some are confusing or applicable in very limited situations (and hurtful in other). If you want more elaborate explanation, I might place a reply in the initial topic, but only if there is really a desire to dig this post up.

Crate posted a video as well: https://youtu.be/kCOU6Qtt2nw

I think there's no better way to learn tactics than to watch them in action.

I was thinking of linking that too but I didn't because it had no voice-over / commentary. If that's not a problem then there's also this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMw-wBbD4Ac which I made of my first felid clearing V:5, but I misplayed the start due to forgetting that ctele delays tele, and then having to 'spend' the ctele on a blink. I would do a better job these days but I suppose this is still one of the better V:5 clears on video.

Re: Tasonir's list of guides/resources

Crate does do some commentary, but it's not really an explanation of why/what's going on, as much as just reactions to things that happened. It's fairly difficult to do explanations and play the game at the same time, of course. I didn't watch the entire run, but a fair amount of the start. Also I think ascii is less likely to appeal to newer players, who are more likely to use webtiles/tiles, as are players in general more likely to use webtiles/tiles. Been a while but I believe tiles are roughly 70-80% playerbase.

I left my video off the above list, I'll go back up and edit it in. Still haven't re-recorded audio for the copyright-flagged videos, but maybe I'll do that sometime. Just frustrating to have to redo something I already did, but I certainly could. I'm not entirely sure if my commentary is any better, but I tried :)

  Code:
!lg * recent x=cdist(name)
<Sequell> 851518 games for * (recent): cdist(name)=15247
!lg * recent tiles x=cdist(name)
<Sequell> 700933 games for * (recent tiles): cdist(name)=13635
!calc 13635.0 / 15247
<Sequell> 0.89

That doesn't take into account people with multiple accounts, of course. It also doesn't take into account local players, which according to the survey (don't remember the exact numbers and don't have a link) and the communities I've seen is much bigger than webtiles and has an even higher percentage of tiles players.

I did an unofficial poll of all the crawl players I personally know, and 100% of them play tiles offline.
I did play 2 or 3 floors of online tiles once, and I noped right out of that. Lag, and a less friendly interface? No thanks.

CBRO is much less laggy.
