I find a lot of people referring to this god or that as 'she'. For me though, they hold a particularly male archetype. So maybe anyone with a predilection to imagine women can explain? And anyone who doesn't either.

Anyway this is my sexing:

Females
Elyvilon - The name, it is so much like a portmanteau of Ellie, Eve, and Eileen. Spell it backwards and Nolivyle would be totally a dude.
Sif Muna - Again because of the feminine name. It could have been Mr. Sif Muno or Mr. Sif Manu, but no we can't have that.
Fedhas - I just find it odd to even entertain the possibility that the god of nature and fertility is male. Although those active blastysites are a admittedly a potent symbol of masculine virility.
Ru - Just because aura of power is so much like aura of nagging.

Males
everybody else

Gods in Crawl have no gender. Anyone using gendered pronouns to refer to them is technically incorrect.

It seems like a lot of people associate nature/passiveness/healing as female so everyone says "she" with fedhas or elyvilon, but these discussions are always really dumb anyways (gods are free of the cultural and physical restraints that cause men and women to act differently, so gender is a nonissue for them. Or at least that's how I like to look at it)

Actually now that I think of it gods in pantheistic religions often show some very human traits - they can be wrathful, petty, lustful, they also usually have genders.

appropriate pronouns for crawl gods: she, he, it, they, zhe, etc.

inappropriate pronouns for crawl gods: ones you imagine refer to an actual gender the god has.

Well, going by various gender stereotypes, these are my impressions:

Ashenzari - I think of Ash as male. Ash is sometimes a male name, e.g. "Ash Williams."
Beogh - obsessed with blood and destruction, seems male
Chei - I think of Chei as female. The name "Chei" sounds feminine to me.
Dithmenos - male, because most ninjas are portrayed as male
Elyvilon - caring, healing female
Fedhas - neuter. Cares only about plants, so doesn't strike me as having any human qualities. Fedhas is a sentient plant.
Gozag - male greedy banker
Jiyva - neuter, because it's a formless jelly. No human qualities.
Kiku - evil and violent, male
Lugonu - "Lucy" is female.
Makhleb - evil and violent, male
Nemelex - most trickster gods are male, like Loki
Okawaru - heroic feats of violence, seems male
Qazlal - neuter. I think of Qazlal as like a sentient storm
Ru - neuter. Ru is beyond our reality and thus very far from human
Sif - female
Trog - rage and destruction, male
Vehumet - explosions and destruction, male
Xom - male, because Xom is a trickster like Nemelex
Yred - a neutered corpse. Yred is like the Jiyva or Fedhas of the grave. Yred opposes holy beings, "prefers corpses to be put to use," and hates "artificial beings" because they are not subject to death. These attributes make me think Yred genuinely cares for the well-being of the undead, and is their protector and advocate. This makes the most sense if Yred is undead.
Zin - strict rules, seems male
TSO - summons angels who seem feminine, I think TSO is female

But how do we get more girl gods in crawl?

kiku is obviously female. Kiku's one of those egyptian cats they mummified and entombed with a pharoah to serve him when he becomes some kind of god of death. But the cat became a god instead. And the cat was female.

Chei is like father time. Clearly male. Maybe chei followers should grow progressively longer white beards as they gain piety to reflect this.

It's generally done, or at least I do it, because male is considered the default gender. Gendering things with unknown or no genders as female provides some contrast from all of the historical, default he's, and helps to balance it somewhat. Look at the various people who made a list, and tally the numbers. How many are male dominated? How many are 50/50? Why did no one make most of the gods female? To be fair, bcadren did say they're all female, so I guess that counts as a list, but hey

Although the most interesting part is that apparently everyone agrees that Ru is beyond gender...What you're missing is that all the gods are

Why is power male, and healing female?

In my personal canon, they're beings of such cosmic scale that puny mortal minds can't comprehend them, so reduce them to gendered beings of their own race.

As a result of this, demigods born of (for example) The Shining One may have a mortal mother in one case, and a mortal father in the other. It's magic, okay?

I've always found the idea of gods having sexes quite amusing. If they are gods, they can surely have all the genitals and chromosomes they want.

Awright, fair point. What I really meant was this: It makes me sad and uncomfortable when I see the sorts of stereotypes many members of the community openly subscribe to, in part because I feel it makes the community a less welcoming place for people who don't conform to those stereotypes. I feel uncomfortable enough about it that I feel the need to say something dissenting, but I made the mistake of initially doing so via snark rather than saying it directly.
