Scratching Trees

Last mini-prop for the moment. Similar to an older proposal; but I think I've learned since then.

Scratching Trees would be an encompass vault for Lair:8. It has a number of unique creatures; namely the magic-affine felids (h); mixed in with normal Lair creatures. The felids are as follows:
  • Sabretooths, which have Battlecry and Berserk with the strongest defenses and melee attack of the group.
  • Infusers, which focus on providing charms to themselves and all other creatures. Their unique 'armour other' spell; gives Ozo's Armour to the target.
  • Jinxes; which use lower-level Hexes to great avail, knowing Tukima's Dance, Inner Flame, Sleep and Slow. [Inner Flame is biased to target allies weaker allies (by lowest HP) in melee range of the player.]
  • Portalsmiths; which use translocations-spells and distortion attacks; including the unique 'bolt of distortion'; which does plain damage (like bolt of energy); but then applies an effect like a distortion weapon (Blink or Teleport; small chance of banishment; no chance of additional damage). Unique 'abyssal gateway' calls forth creatures from the abyss [1-2 at a time] (Spatial Vortices, Starcursed Masses, Chaos Spawn, or Tentacled Starspawn).
  • Cryomancers, which use Freeze instead of melee and have a number of other Ice attacks.
Additionally all felids berserk when threatened (like Bears). Most treat being silenced as a threat. Though these are common in the scratching trees; normal lair denizens from rats to frogs to hydra may still appear with the cats.

I'm not dealing with a Lair: 8 spatial vortex.
Lord of Lignification, we bow down to you.

...why aren't you bowing? Stop reading this and bow.

There's a reason distortion doesn't come on ranged weapons..

Re: Scratching Trees

Distortion bolt is a terrifying concept in general, and one you'd never want to face. Putting it as early as the lair is just far too much. The guy who coded it put it in abyss:5 vaults, on a "pan lord" equivalent, which I can sort of see, but would still never go to abyss:5 to face ;)

Having a few lair:8 vaults place felids who have high damage/ev and low hp/ac could be interesting, mostly for variety, they wouldn't show up too commonly. But don't deck them out with strange effects. A caster type or two with a basic monk type felid is fine.

But there's already a spriggan vault.

Ah, but spriggans sometime spawn with usable equipment. With felids, that problem would be solved. This incredible brainstorm showcases a design that could potentially be the worst ratio of risk to reward in Crawl history. It even completely blows the Hall of Blades, experimental Forest branch, or the Spider Nest portal vault out of the water with respect to how bad of an idea it would be to attempt to play through it!

Solution: felids have mastered the mysteries of time, and you encounter "ancient felids" who have mastered the mysterious lost art of jump attacking, which places them behind you and cuts off retreat. Boom, unique tactics, you can thank me later. ;)

Re: Scratching Trees

seriously, tho. I entered the forest twice. the first time, with a insanely powerful DsBe and the ignite blood facet, and a rod of fire. I burned the whole place to the ground. fun as fuck.
my posts are to be read in a mildly playful tone, with a deep, sexy voice.
