Choices, choices.

Though it's not in the spirit of the thread, the answer to that is Poisonous Cloud. Mephitic does work on death yaks sometimes, but you can waste a lot of time watching them shrug it off.

That being said, watching them drown is priceless.

I ended up experimenting with both, in the name of science of course.

They worked about equally, because while poisonous cloud was more of a sure thing, they just stood there in the mephitic cloud turn after turn and eventually got confused and turned into tasty floating meat piles. (I was also wearing an amulet of the gourmand, num num).

You go down the stairs to crypt 2 and land just in sight of a Greater Mummy. :o
You start lobbing firey magic at him (bandages seem awfully flammable, right?) and Boris comes around the corner from the other side. :o
You decide to dodge down a side corridor so that you can nail them both with area effects and run smack into Khufu.

You blink, quaff a potion of brilliance, wield a staff of wizardry and find that you can finally cast Fire Storm. :!:

I don't think shapeshifters can mimic unique monsters.

Although a unique shapeshifter that mimics other uniques might be a fun addition...

Is a D:4 Necronomicon (or other high-level book) really that much of a prize, though? No character is even close to being able to use it at that point, and if you die after that, it has also has the afterthought of "Damn, I never even got to use my Necronomicon..."

If you are going for Nemelex, always mark your first stash object with !p:

  Code:
!p
prompt before sacrificing a stack containing an item with this
inscription; if the answer is "No", the whole stack will be skipped, and
  no items will be sacrificed

You start up a crossbow-using DSHu, and through two ammo spawns (one runed) and a nice pile of EW1 scrolls acquire a nice pile of 53 +4 crossbow bolts. By D:2. I imagine that I'm not running out of ammo anytime soon. Or at all.

Course not. It's just hilarious.

It rocks when you get an altar to your chosen god adjacent when you step onto D:2.

Rounded a corner on D:3 and found a spore and ballistomycete, already in explosion range. I figured I was screwed anyway and poked it. I survived with 1 HP, but 500 exp more than makes up for it. I gained 2 1/3 levels on a demonspawn (making me level 6) and 6 skills gained a level.

I love it when you're playing a DDAr and you decide to go Kiku, thinking "I can hold off baddies until I get enough draining." The most fun is when this results in an incredibly frustrating struggle of burning out your max mp to heal yourself as a necromancer, and when you can barely cast agony twice. Perhaps I should have gone mak or trog upon seeing the temple on D8.

Actually, the correct answer should be Conjure Flame, then Sticky Flame. If burning them once per turn is good, twice is better.

I love it when I find an incredibly difficult spider's nest with a horde of 12 giant centipedes and a similar amount of scorpions guarding the entrance, plenty of tarantellas, jumping spiders, wolf spiders, redbacks, and trapdoor spiders, and a couple of demonic crawlers and emperor scorpions for good measure, resulting in the use of 5 charges of a wand of lightning, 10 from a wand of cold, 5 from a wand of digging, a scroll of blinking, and the exhaustion of my entire MP supply and most of my HP three or four times over.

I mean, even if I didn't find much loot in there, that nest was fun. Props to whoever designed it.

I was a mummy with poison immunity, and it was still terrifying. And awesome. The noise I made was a major issue, because they kept coming to investigate and driving me back further and further into corners.

You gotta be careful in that death trap; even with rPois, most of the critters hit for loads of damage(esp. the Emperor scorpions). Plus, some spiders can move faster than you. The jumping spiders have a bad habit of hopping behind you and blocking your escape path... doesn't help that there's almost no one-space corridors there too, they'll swarm you fast if you make noise.

Olgreb's Toxic Radiance makes very short work of most spider nests, if you can keep the bugs out of range for about five turns per sighting. But yes, if they get close enough to hit you they can still shred you even as they're dissolving from the inside out.

You remove your ring of teleportation.

Oh no! You have blundered into a Zot trap!
