I get one of the entry vaults full of moderately tough monsters behind a door (jackals, oozes, a jelly, etc). It's free XP, if I come back in a few levels.
I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to be able to open the door, though. Because I stepped into view of the door (with translucent walls), a goblin opened it, and then about ten monsters were all coming after me. I died without even leaving the entry vault (OpWz).
Is this the bad luck of having a goblin spawn in there (though I think jellies can go through doors too...), or is there something else I should have done?

It was bad luck. That's now a runed door, so if you were using .13 (maybe .12 also?) that's a bug.

I noticed that a lot. He often gives me +0 gift to whatever you I'm still not wearing.

Okawaru gifts use acquirement code. Armor acquirement is biased to fill slots that you can't fill. (Which means your cloak slot if you haven't seen any cloaks, your glove slots if you haven't seen any gloves, etc.). So this is completely intentional.

Happened to me on the very first game I wanted to try the pain brand. Pain kills dudes really fast, not much to add.

I love it when I find Wand of Paralyze, Wand of Confusion, Wand of Invisibility and 2 scrolls of recharge before Lair while playing a stabber with +2 Evo aptitude (Pale DrEE of Ash). It allows me to use Stone Arrow while having the wands as escape option. They have already saved my life twice (vs Black Mumba and lucky Komodo Dragon). Also I felt much safer when luring Elephants from the pack.

I love it when my second find at D1 is amulet of faith and I am HoPr. 6 stars before Lair allowed me to get as many followers in Orcish Mines as I wanted.

I enter D13, and hear snorts and the counting of coins. Magic mapping reveals 6 portal/shop entries. I find a pair of shops, then the labyrinth, another shop, then the bazaar. I breeze through the bazaar then defeat the minotaur. The archway is a treasure trove, and it wants a steam dragon armour I could have bought in the bazaar. But that's gone now.

Oh well! I got an artefact rPois ring from the bazaar, and a plain one from the Lab, along with some gloves of slaying, so I can venture into spider now.

Same game, D15, two boots running for 40 and 48 gold.
