...I'm in tooth-and-nail combat with a unique and my (big, powerful) undead minions are several squares away, kicking the stuffing out of a fungus and a plant, respectively.

I guess nobody said the shambling undead were the sharpest of knives, but c'mon. A little help.

Also true. Kill the leafy blighters (see below)!

The discoveries of this game have been 1) realising what Bjorgnor's Revivification actually does (I can't believe took Sublimation of Blood before it last time) and 2) frogs of all kinds, but especially the spiny sort, make great zombie minions. Not as good as hydras, but then, hydras are slower and don't come in gangs of four or five like Blink Frogs.

Feeling Nec-romantic

PS to whichever dev came up with the vault with three stairs down to Lair:8 in the killing zone between a bunch of well-spaced oklobs... you are really not my favourite person today.

(Same game)

Hearing the Labyrinth ticker going nuts... when you're in the Orcish Mines and can't get to it because (it turns out that) it's in another section.

(That's two missed Labs in this game, the first one was my own fault though as I was too chicken to charge through the Lair looking for it.)

Labyrinths no longer happen in Orc, in trunk, and you get at most one per game.

Which brings up something I've been wondering about (only started playing since 0.7, which is what I still play until 0.8 happens I guess)...

do most people play the released version, or trunk? I get the feeling that trunk is in flux a fair bit. But, although it might have some weirdnesses, it's also potentially had the benefit of the latest balancing tweaks.

Is there a general feeling?

I'm on a Macbook, so even though I have windows with BootCamp, I prefer playing the MacOS version of tiles, so I'm always on the released version and not the trunk version.

BTW, why is it called trunk? Must be some developer term I'm not familiar with.

In order:

- I tend to declare war on local vegetation whenever there's a plausible reason to do so (waiting for something, or victory-dancing my way into the Fighting skill as a spellcaster).

- Lair was generally regarded as "boring", which it kind of is, so Minmay decided to spice it up a bit by adding oklobs. Must be after Lemuel's job.

- All trunk all the time. On the few occasions (like now) where the newest version gets crash-happy, I just use one of the previous versions.

- One of my favorite things is distortion weapons generated before D:5. I mean that non-sarcastically, though; it's rare enough to either be a source of hilarious death, or - as a [Lugonite / Xom-bie / general lunatic] - a major power boost. Assuming you survive, of course.

Some days are just full of win:

You slash the nine-headed hydra!
You chop one of the nine-headed hydra's heads off!
The eight-headed hydra grows two more!
The ten-headed hydra writhes in agony.
You kill the ten-headed hydra!
Kikubaaqudgha accepts your kill.
Cast which spell? (? or * to list)
You call on the dead to rise... The dead are walking!

What good luck! You find the Vaults.
What bad luck! You run into the ghost of your predecessor on V:2.
What good luck! He was a Transmuter.
What bad luck! He had learned Orb of Destruction anyway. Stupid Sif Muna.
What good luck! You are standing at a corner. *crump*

And on the gripping hand, you know Dispel Undead, with 20 in Necromancy.

Best of luck to you.

In that last game of mine, Qblades were literally raining from Trog's hands, I must have received six, seven or the like.

Alas, the char didn't stand up to an ancient lich and his four 1s on Zot:5 ...

In my current game, I found

Erolcha
Maurice
Eustachio
Edmund
Erica
Prince Ribbit

all in different rooms of the same early dungeon level. I admit that yours were a lot tougher, but it still made me gape a bit. Especially when I ran out of MP because, you know - there couldn't be *another* one just around the corner.

Could there?

[edit: Come to think of it, I think Erolcha and Maurice were together. I like Marice's new tile!]

In fact, during the 0.7 development, when such unique clusters were introduced, someone on ##crawl announced to have met as much as ten uniques on a single floor. Myself, I met seven once, although, IIRC, not as nasty.

For the record, in the current game I had Saint Roka, Roxanne, Donald, Polyphemus and Nergalle on Shoals:4. Cleared them, and after a few minutes, on D:18, Nikola, Norris and Mara within approx. 30*30 squares.
I ran, well, like a hasted Spriggan :)

I loved it when I decided to clear the top 6 levels of Elf, and discovered that Elf is now only 5 levels deep (wiki and leanrdb notwithstanding).

I found out the hard way ;)

I had a similar story - playing online after a few weeks, quite a promising character, so I decided to clear Elf. I was very surprised that the CDO bot on ##crawl informed me and everyone that I reached Elf:5. I was even more surprised to find the vault only moments later :).

Erolcha banished me when I was XL11.
I made it out, went on and returned to her level when I was a bit tougher.
She then fell in two hits.

I see a Meat Ration on the floor, out in the open.

It always looks like a cartoon steak in tiles mode, and because of years of association in cartoons and movies ("Nice one Chewie - always thinking with your stomach"), I am convinced it's a trap. It always takes an effort of will to just go pick it up, looking real casual-like.

Maybe I should try vault construction...

I love it when I do something hilariously stupid. Like when I stubbornly armed and unarmed my SpCK of Lugonu with a dagger of distortion, just to get the banishment effect so that I could have some fun in Abyss. So stubbornly I did that until the dagger gave my SpCK a yellow glowing, giving him several bad mutations. And only after he died, I realized that I completely forgot there're gates to Abyss in the main dungeon. :(

I've been having annoying luck with resistances (like the rC++++++ thread a while back, it's all I've seen), no rPois in particular is becoming a royal pain, then hit a point in Vaults where I can't get around one or more Unseen Horrors, and I start feeling a bit desperate so figure I'll try the earlier levels of Snake.

On the second level of which, a scroll of acquirement gives me a randart pair of boots with rPois and See Invisible.

Some times, I think the RNG actually cares.

which polymorphs into a swamp drake :o ... Here goes nothing! I zap again...
"The swamp drake evaporates and reforms as a human!"
With help from many enslaved monsters, I finally managed to kill it, reaching XL 6 in the process. This was terrifying and crazy awesome at the same time...

Erolcha did this to me once at about XL 12. I managed to escape (my first time!) and returned to Erolcha. She then proceeded to cast me right back in the Abyss.

I didn't make it out the second time.

Yeah, just had something similar happen to me. Labyrinth spawns on D10. Of course, the down stairs all spawn together and are surrounded by 3 ogres, 4 centaurs, and an orc warrior. So running forward to find the labyrinth isn't a brilliant plan. Finally killed em all. Lab times out. Of course.

Then get shafted to D11. Find another portal (I think to a bailey). It is the vicious one where you can see through the clear walls so the timer starts, but of courser, the door is way over on the other side of the map. I can't get to the entrance without fighting through a mob including a troll and an unseen horror plus at least 3 ogres and an unique. Jozef or something. Portal times out.

Yeah, I so love no-way situations. Really. Such a brilliant design component.

Hey, at least in 0.8 they've stopped Labyrinth portals spawning in t'Mines, which was often harsh. Sometimes things will still get in the way and we're screwed, but I definitely feel like they're trying. And Portals are not supposed to always be gettable... ask me if I've ever successfully entered a Wizlab. Go on ;)

Yeah, I guess just I disagree with that.

A game can be hard, but skill should matter. Any aspect of the game that cannot be solved with skill--such as unavoidable deaths or portals that cannot be reached--is, in my opinion, flawed and should be fixed.

It is good to hear that the dev team does try to eliminate such situations.
