... I spend 39 gold on an unidentified scroll in a shop on D:12 turns out to be a scroll of acquirement, which gives me 950 gold, so I can buy the Book of Dreams waiting on Orc:4 for 1050 gold to pay the fare for the treasure trove, which gives me 2000 more gold, plus 4 potions of curemut.

I love it when I mature as White Dr.
I love it when I find +10 greatsword {freeze, Str+4} before Lair and that makes my weapon category choice obvious.
I love it when I buy Plutonium Sword in Orc 4.
I don't love it when I forget that Dr is the only species without GDR and die after getting 80+ melee damage despite AC 27 and EV 24.

I don't love it when people make choices based on an assumption of GDR and die as a result. Seriously, this is why you should always play as though GDR doesn't exist.

As a somewhat experienced player I have a feeling of how much I can lose to Vault Warden, Slime Creature etc. with AC 27, EV 24 character. That feeling was result of many games with similar characters, all of them were wearing some armour with GDR (I have never played melee Dr offline). I was just playing as usual and suddenly got really surprised/killed. Technically I didn't die to those 80+ hits but there is very little what you can do when you have several adjacent monsters, all doors locked and some Yaktaurs to make blinking a suicide too (I used fear, then summoning and then tried to heal). What killed me was that lack of GDR, not my thoughts like "I will keep fighting because GDR will save me" as you assumed :)

If you played as if GDR doesn't exist, then you would expect a draconian with X ac and Y ev to be no more squishy in melee than any other race with X ac and Y ev. In fact, that's basically what happened, and if Sandman had kept GDR in mind(and the lack thereof on Dracs) he may have survived instead.

Ah here's where the other shoe dropped.

No offense man but what killed you was getting into a situation in which several enemies were adjacent to you, with yaktaurs off in the wings, no less. GDR maybe would have given you one more turn before you died, at best, but you would have to be very lucky to get out of that situation alive, regardless of GDR (unless you have revivification or d.door or sanctuary, etc., then yeah you can get out of these kinds of situations pretty well).

Yes, I was attacked by 4 monsters, all melee (I hide behind them from Yaktaurs).
Vault warden with battleaxe(attack 36 + 15), Slime Creature (attack 22) and 2 Vampire Mosquitos (attack 13, speed 19). Before you jump on that, please keep in mind that I had AC 27 and with GDR 33% max damage (assuming all 6 AC rolls were 0) would be much less:
1) max damage without GDR: 51 + 22 + 13*4 = 125
2) max damage with GDR 33%: 42 + 15 + 9*4 = 93
Vault warden killed me with 46 damage.
I think second item makes it clear that my feeling was close to truth, it is extremely unlucky to lose 80+ damage to those monsters during a single turn with GDR 33%. But first item makes it clear that it is not that uncommon for Dr.

Re: I love it when...

The difference between 125 and 93 is not insignificant, but it really isn't something that should alter how you play, since taking 93 damage while in the presence of multiple enemies and having no escape routes is still *way* too much, even for a robust species.

Now that's not to say GDR isn't helpful, but it is mostly helpful in a cumulative way: You will take a lot less damage in melee over time, which means less consumable use, less resting, etc. Maybe a few encounters that would have been borderline without *any* GDR become "probably safe" *with* GDR (all else staying the same), but any turn in which you can take 93 damage and you do not have a fail-safe, 1-turn escape (like a 100% safe place to blink to), is a dire situation. In some sense you were in greater danger due to having no GDR, but only in a technical sense. Once a situation is sufficiently dangerous that you have a real chance of dying, then qualitatively the difference between "25% chance of death" and "30% chance of death" really doesn't matter. Your response is the same; you are going to go into full blown crisis-retreat mode, sacrificing whatever you have to in order to survive.

Saying "I would have survived this turn if I had GDR" may be accurate, but that's not the same as "I died because I lacked GDR." On the contrary, you died because you got in over your head relative to the escape options you had available. It is possible that with GDR and a lot of luck you may have gotten away, but that would just mean that you avoided a death that would have been deserved.

Re: I love it when...

By the way I know it is frustrating to lose a guy that deep in the game, and you have my condolences.

But it also deserves mentioning that, aside from gargoyles, you aren't going to have even mediocre GDR values (much less 33%) without some armor that gives encumbrance and thus lowers your EV, and you probably won't have 27 AC without training at least a decent amount of armor skill. So on a non-Draconian, sure, your guy would maybe have GDR, but it would have been necessary to spend a lot more experience to get 27 AC, 24 EV (again, unless Gargoyle or something).

True, I died because I forgot that I lacked GDR :) and was much more vulnerable than other species. I don't pretend I am playing a typical fighter with Fe/Op, but here I did :(

I think second item makes it clear that my feeling was close to truth, it is extremely unlucky to lose 80+ damage to those monsters during a single turn with GDR 33%. But first item makes it clear that it is not that uncommon for Dr.

This same logic can be used with equal validity to say that EV is useless because it doesn't change the max damage you can receive. Obviously in reality you aren't just getting GDR for free -- there are costs associated with it, usually EV, and realistically your probable distribution of damage is different but not significantly worse on a high AC character w/o GDR as compared with a high AC character w/ GDR due to those costs.

Even aside from all of that and pretending that there are no costs associated w/ getting GDR, you've illustrated that you could well have taken 80+ damage from those exact enemies while having 33% GDR -- in fact, they could have done that and still only done 84% of their max possible damage, leaving a lot of room for it to have been even worse.

Yes, I don't like high distribution of crawl damage. I had 157 HP so 80 damage was not that bad unless I got 46 damage from a single monster in a couple of turns.

You are on level 1 of the Tomb of the Ancients.

Oh no! You have blundered into a Zot trap!
An unnatural silence engulfs you.
There is a Zot trap here.
There is a stone staircase leading down here.

The trap was adjacent to stairs to Tomb 2 :)

Miscast effect is more effective than (or just as effective as) actually successfully casting the spell.

    36 | D:1      | Reached XP level 4. HP: 15/23 MP: 8/8

Edit: Died, but next game this happened O_O
  Code:
Enchant which weapon? (? for menu, Esc to quit)
Your cursed +4 dagger glows red for a moment.
Read which item? (? for menu, Esc to quit)
As you read the scroll labeled YTTANG LOEFEYNT, it crumbles to dust.
You hear a loud clanging noise!
It was a scroll of noise.
Read which item? (? for menu, Esc to quit)
As you read the scroll labeled XAZEUP OCIOSK, it crumbles to dust.
This is a scroll of acquirement!
[a] Weapon [b] Armour        [c] Jewellery [d] Book [e] Staff
[f] Wand   [g] Miscellaneous [h] Food      [i] Gold [j] Ammunition
What kind of item would you like to acquire? (\ to view known items)
Something appears at your feet!
k - a runed quick blade
Wield which item (- for none, * to show all)? (? for menu, Esc to quit)

Is that even possible or have I stumbled upon some bug?

That's normal. Weapons without brands can get up to +12 enchantment.

Re: I love it when...

Really? Thought they could only get up to +9, but I guess I'm dumb. Anyway, that super early +10 quickblade brought me all the way to Z:5 with 5 runes before dying a stupid death to a orb of fire. :/
