Also please don't lock this thread, it's interesting and popular.

Re: The Debate Derail Thread

it really is. thanks for showing us.
here, let me show you the song of my people.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpt43Ki1vqA
nobody here speaks Portuguese, so I translated the lyrics for you:
  Code:
I stand by
The truth
Of the answers of a child
This is life, life is beautiful
and beautiful.
To live
Not being afraid
To show your happiness,
To sing and nothing less than sing
The beauty of being
eternally a learner.
Oh Lord
I know, I know
Life should be
Way better and surely it will
But this doesn't stop me
From repeating this:
Life is beautiful, it's beautiful
and beautiful.
So life,...
Life - what is it?
Tell me, my brother
Life is the beating
of a heart
It is a sweet illusion
He! Ho!..
And life,...
Is it wonder
or suffering?
Is it joy
Or sorrow?
What is life, what is it,
My brother?
Some say
That our lives
are worth nothing in the world
It is water drop, a crumb of time
That does last not even a second
Others say that
Life is a divine
Deep mistery
"It is the breath of God,
Plentiful deed of His love"
You say it is opulence and luxury
A man says life means "to live"
A girl says she would rather die
For she has no love
and the verb is "to suffer"
I only know that I trust
And have faith in her
We are the makers of life
Doing it as we can, are allowed or want
Life is always what we want
However wrong it might seem
No one wants death
Everyone wants only health and good luck
And the question keeps spinning in our minds
And our heads go dizzy
I stand by truth
Of the answers of a child
This is life, life is beautiful
and beautiful.

So I was making a ham sandwich for lunch today, as I do four times a week, and I noticed the sliced ham package said "gluten free". You mean there's no gluten in ham? You're telling me you managed to slice ham without putting any wheat in it? This is incredible!

Maybe people just don't know what gluten is? If that's the case, it's a protein found in wheat, so basically "gluten = wheat" isn't too terribly far off. But if we need to put that on packaging, I think we clearly need more consumer education on the topic. To further that cause, I came up with a wonderful slogan that you can use to get this message across on future packaging:

"Meat ain't wheat"

Short, simple, rhymes. It has a lot more style and panache than "gluten-free". Anyone packaging meat in the future is welcome to use it, royalty free.

There's an interesting theorem called the ham sandwich theorem which basically says that you can put some ham between two pieces of bread and cut all three components in half with a single slice, making a perfectly bisected sandwich. hell, if you've got the skills you don't even need the ham and the bread to be on the same plate before you slice them (with a plane) so you can slice the stuff and then assemble the half sandwiches at your leisure.

today a friend of mine and i were walking from the library to some shitty pizza place for lunch and she said to me, with no context other than that we had been to the cinema yesterday, that if she had a body, cut out the organs and filled the cavities with maize, then cremated it, if i thought it would make popcorn. we both assume there would be popcorn, at least briefly since even if the incinerator is too hot (our main concern), the popcorn would have to move from room temperature to popping temperature to ashes so there would be transient popcorn. i think i'm going to ask her out, so i'm sorry if i've neglected my sob story duties over the last couple of weeks but i think i'll have a great one pretty soon.

genuinely awful and unorganised post incoming, but none of my friends had any free time these past few days so i'm posting this anyway (normally i tell some person willing to listen irl the cringey emotional shit so i can save the good "my life sucks" spiel for tavern). i swear i asked someone if he wanted to go for a drink last night but he "had to get up early", point being, i tried avoiding this fiasco but here it comes:

i want to date her because i feel like i get increasingly pissed off at everyone if i'm with them for a few hours, but for various reasons, she's the exception to that rule. this kind of shit is really hard to put into words, mostly because you always end up sounding so generic and in this case trying too hard to be edgy, but that's exactly how i feel and it's like i'm finally getting a break from only interacting with people when i have some ulterior motive (see above) after at least a few years of only that.
not to mention i'm pathetically emotionally dependent on her. this whole "i can hang out with her and always enjoy myself" has the downside of time without her sucking, who would've thought that!

and she's into penguins too! - which i hope is not some kind of pattern on my part. i think it's some sort of theme among young doctoral students researching shit that they didn't think they would research when they were 8 and dreaming about becoming scientists, like cellular signalling and tumour markers and stuff, as fascinating as that is, to become obsessed again with the topics they did like as children. penguins seem to be pretty popular, or new insect species in rainforests, or you know, you can just drink and watch tv at night so you don't have to worry about how your research is so obscure you can't see anyone but yourself and your immediate colleagues reading it, or maybe that's just because i'm the "cellular signalling" part and she's doing cancer, so she's probably really fulfilled and i'm trying to feel less inadequate. and probably people just naturally like penguins and rainforests, and i'm just projecting! but moving on:

in the interest of resolving the airport penguin girl story, i met her again, she apparently had a good(ish) reason for running off and we've seen each other (as mutual friends of popcorn girl) a few times since. that actually went pretty well which is why i haven't mentioned it here. edit: "seen each other" as in a group of 3 friends, not as in "i met her via popcorn girl and we were dating"

i've not asked her (popcorn girl, obviously) out yet. i mean it's pretty clear i'm completely spineless, and then there's the whole cliche issue about this being a fantastic friendship. we have seen each other about every 2nd day for 2 weeks which makes me kind of hopeful.
sunday night we got really drunk lying on her bed watching phineas & ferb and reptiles hatching from eggs (i don't know...), i spent the night, but on a mattress in her room, which means that we stripped down to t-shirts and underwear and awkwardly avoided looking at each other for the rest of the night.

I had to google it for a long time trying to find out what it means. cool.

Dang dude, how did you know?
Actually my eyebrows are pretty stiff. I have always wanted to be able to, like, do the wave with them and stuff but I am just physically unable. My nails are usually pretty well kept (I was just in the garden though, so maybe not at this exact moment).

My turn! I'm getting a darker, more hirsute Robert Downy Jr. Vibe from you, Hirsch I.
