Trove reporting

This topic reminds me that I often asked the tavern about Troves being worth it.

On the same principle as Best/Worst Artifacts, here's a topic to list your trove loots, don't forget to mention the price, and the character if it changes the importance of the loot.

Trove.

Price to get in was a +3 Gold Dragon Armour. Bought a +0 GDA for 2000 gold at an early shop. Blew 3 EA scrolls.

Trove of Scrolls.
2 EA, bunch of ID, 1 EW, and a bunch of other consumable scrolls that I already had.
No acquirement scrolls or Brand Weapon scrolls.


THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ACQUIREMENT SCROLLS IN A DAMN SCROLL TROVE.


I'm out 1 EA and / or a +3 GDA on a Gargoyle Gladiator.

I didn't really want it. At the time I dropped it, I've got two CPAs (one artefact), an amazing artefact chain, and now enough additional EA scrolls that if I find a hide and really want it, I'll brand it.

I was very happy with my last trove! Even if I usually stupidly die because I want to save potion/scroll for trove rather than using it...

I was playing a Merfolk Gladiator, using Trident and FDA

Because my attacks/spells are more powerful

I use such items in case of emergency, or for killing hydra when I have a cutting weapon, which doesn't deserve investing XP in it

But if you can please tell me how evocation will change my life, I would be grateful

One use of a lamp of fire with ~15 evo means you get 3-5 elementals, and a quarter of your screen get filled with clouds of flame, which stay here for a while. It's really efficient when there are multiple enemies, as they will get clouded and damaged while you take care of the others.

It's easy to try it in the Ziggurat sprint ;)

The horn of geryon with decent evocations is my preferred method for dealing with orbs of fire.

Some examples:
1) fan of gales pushes everyone away from you (really great when you have adjacent monsters while standing on stairs and want to leave the level), it does not require MP/huge investment in Hexes/light armour, works under Silence effect
2) lamp of fire damages a large area, puts flame clouds and summons monsters, it does not require MP, huge investment in Conjurations/Fire Magice/Spellcasting, works under Silence effect
3) stone of tremor creates 1-3 summons AND destroys walls, even if you have 2 similar spells you would need 2 turns to achieve similar effect
4) disc of storm damages huge area, monster can be hit multiple times, again no MP/magic schools.
5) crystal ball of energy allows to restore 18 MP on average

Basically try these items at low Evocations and at high Evocations, the difference is huge, some of them don't even work at low Evocations.

Don't forget that phial of floods is basically a full-LOS crystal spear that generates 3 friendly water elementals around the target and put them in unfavorable terrain, or that stone of tremors can shaft enemies. Also, don't forget that phantom mirror is absolutely nuts, and sack of spiders can create a nice screen for an escape, block LOS, or kill monsters ranging up to orb guardians remarkably quickly.

Basically, there are a lot of very good items that are powered by Evocations. If you have a lot of Evocations, these items are very good; if you have some of these items, getting a lot of Evocations is often a good choice.

The only time evocations isn't worth training is when you're doing extremely fast turncount speedruns with a very strict training scheme. (Because you're already underlevelled as fuck as it is.)

There's also laziness and lack of will to deal with the inventory clutter, but that's not really a good theoretical reason is it now.

On my current char - trove wanted some salamander armor which a shop happened to be holding, so i purchased it for 1600 gold.. in the trove i found +2 hat of the Alchemist (worn) {rElec rF+ rC+ MR+} and +2 pair of fencer's gloves (worn) {EV+3 Dex+6 Slay+2}.. both of them im obviously still using,and since i have over 10k gold ill never use now that ive cleared all the potion/scroll/food shops id definitely say it was worth it :).. trove also had some other worthless crap of course, dont remember what, only two good artifacts tho

Other good combinations were AC27, EV 30 and AC 36, EV 27 but I decided to get rElec and rPois instead. New rules for EV punish heavy armour heavily so I still hope to find FDH or PDH.

At the moment then armour skill barely does anything to reduce the EV penalty of heavy armor, which is extraordinarily silly unless the purpose of the change was to make Str the only sensible way to reduce it.

example:
You have 20 str, 23 dex. At 18 dodging you get 31 EV without armor on.
At 0 armour you drop down to 18 EV in plate. At 27 armour, you are down to 21 EV in plate.
At 35 str, you are down to 24 EV in plate at 0 armour, and 26 EV at 27 armour.

It's always been like that. Armour skill's effect wasn't changed.

Normally I consider this a steep price unless I happen to have 2 HW wands but I was feeling fruity and happened to be holding the item.

You're playing a monk, at level 23, and found a spell book of blade hands that you don't want? Maybe if you have claws 3, I can see blade hands being somewhat redundant (blade hands is like claws 6 or so, it varies)...But that's worth picking up and at your level won't even cost that much, unless you really, really want to stick to "Spelless" for some reason. You don't have to use it all the time if you want to keep a really good shield, but certainly there are some cases where higher damage is worth melding a shield.

Didnt pick up the last enchant armour needed until retrieving the Abyssal rune, so opened very late (XL27, endgame gear).

Didnt take any of the items in the end. Salamander hide might have been nice for Zot 5, though I had already cleared it out with just 1 pip of rF, hat and cloak held too much -AC for an Ogre. He was already wearing Moon Troll Leather and it was hard to see a torso upgrade coming, even from an armour trove. Was deeply disappointed by the hat/cloak offerings since this was where I wanted help.

Took the cash, the rmut (only real positive) and Bloodlust (which im wearing for mr and slay). Bloodlust was probably meant to be the terrible cherry on this turd of a trove but due to my stasis Its actually the best.

why the hell were trove prices made dependent on your character in the first place? being a mummy doesn't make the game stop generating potions on the ground, weapon shops still generate for felids, it makes no fucking sense for trove prices to change

I think the idea for troves is that you give up an item that is at least theoretically good for your character in exchange for potentially better loot, not gather useless junk and get a free chance of something cool. Of course, if that item is truly important giving it up is never worth it but that's just how Crawl is.

Well, you are right unless Fe cannot get a trove with weapons and Mu cannot get a trove with potions.
Provided the trove uses acquirement code for some items (as far as I know) I guess we should change acquirement first.

they used to be able to, but it was changed so they can't; that's what I'm complaining about

I always assumed Troves were blind to the character. In the past, playing as Mu*, I've been careful to retrieve all potions from timed portals on the off-chance a trove wants curemut.

Like Sar, I feel the point of trove costs is to make a sacrifice, the items asked for are generally highly valuable. It should not ask for useless items (even though i might have spent lots of gold buying those 6 blinks...its not like the game hadnt generated 6 for me on the floor). Troves should neither ask for nor reward useless items. (grey to char in question)

River trove doesnt use acquirement code right? Just 16 random items? Its the only way I can make sense of amulet of stasis coming out of it...

I don't know about river trove, but I'm pretty sure you can acquire an amulet of stasis.

To be fair, for that character, bloodlust is really good loot, and rmut is not useless. And the cost was only "wait until six useless scrolls generate, then hunt them down and collect them."

Abyss shifts for Formicids as usual, right? So you could put an amulet of stasis on to prevent a shift in Abyss when you see the rune or a gate, whichever you were looking for.

I don't think stasis prevents abyss shifts.
