Re: Trove reporting

While we are on the theme of rings and things!

So I pushed into Elf hoping for some rPois and MR to show up, before a choice of Spider or Shoals…
And just beyond the entry chamber and a substantial welcoming committee we have:

Elf 1 trove
Ticket: Lose all acquired piety
“Pick a ring, any ring…”

This ogre is already busy with giant maces so Reflect amulets are kinda blah for the moment, but the top two rings alone are great. And I may use the last amulet to recover some piety. :D

Whites
Ring of Oxyuxtud {rPois, rC+, MR++, Dex -4, Sinv}
Ring of Midwinter {Str+3, Dex+6}
Ring of Zoumpa {*Corrode, rElec, rPois, Sinv, Stlth+}
Ring of the Invisible Mice {rF+, MR+, MP+9, Slay-5, Stlth+}
Ring of Tebehua {+Blink, rElec, rC-, Str+7, Stlth+}
Ring “Pozxe” {MP+9, Stlth+}
Ring “Iplobisi” {rC+, MR+, Dex+2}

Amulet of Unnen {Reflect, Dex+2, SH+3}
Amulet “Jebuil” {Reflect, rC+++, rN+, MP -9, SH+2}
Amulet “Pudic” {Faith, rF++, rC-, rN++}

Blues
Cursed -2 ring of intelligence
+5 ring of intelligence
Ring of magical power
Ring of poison resistance
Ring of protection from cold

I'd gone through most of Vaults with just a +1 flaming battleaxe, not finding much with higher enchantments.

Unless something has changed recently, electrocution only has a chance to proc on each hit. Is the Wiki wrong on this one? I mean, sure it's pretty good on a dagger or even hand axe (more particularly, around Lair where everything is less durable and fewer mobs are immune to elec there)...

Since the brand inflicts a flat rate of damage independent of the damage your weapon does, electrocution brands work best on a fast weapon with low base delay (demon whips, quick blades, spears, whips, etc.).

I suppose you might argue that you get more damage out of the procs over a long time, on average, than from the more consistent bonuses of flaming or freezing? I dunno really, I've used elec around Vaults before too and it seemed okay but I've felt somehow more impressed with freezing in particular.

Re: Trove reporting

Elec is good on a battle axe, as it is on pretty much anything. The damage difference to flaming/freezing isn't something I ever consciously noticed. What's nice about elec is that there are fewer resistant/immune enemies than for pretty much every other brand.

Re: Trove reporting

Elec is at least as good in terms of damage as flaming/freezing, even on normal speed weapons. It's just that it gets way better than those brands on fast weak weapons. It's never bad.

I dunno really, I've used elec around Vaults before too and it seemed okay but I've felt somehow more impressed with freezing in particular.

Elec will outdamage freezing, flaming, and draining on average in all but the most pathalogical cases, on even the heaviest weapons, given a set of things that isn't resistant or immune.

It is less consistent, however the average damage is higher *including that inconsistency*

While it is true that elec is a flat bonus, and flaming/freezing are percentage based, in effect that just means that the difference is *larger* on faster, lighter weapons, and that to get to the point where feezing/flaming catch up requires less over the top rediculousness (last i checked you needed something like 60 str on a +9 exec axe at min delay. To get freezing to average the same as elec, but that was a while ago)

Axes have a secondary reason to find flat damage brands appealing, as the cleaving secondary hits do lower damage, and hence the freezing/flaming brand's damage is lowered too, whereas elec is not.

As has been pointed out, there are are also far fewer things that are resistant to elec, although the things that are, are totally immune.

Some other minor facets that make other brands useful to use should you have access to more than one:

Cold can slow cold blooded things (mostly reptiles, not ones that have any cold resistance though)

Fire cauterizes hydra heads so you can reduce the number of heads with a flaming bladed weapon.

Draining does pretty good damage to anything that isnt resistant, and can lower their attack power.

For damage doing brands, i usually prefer:

Holy=silver>pain>elec>drain>freezing>flaming>vorpal

Presuming you are looking at things that take damage from such sources,

That isnt going to be always 100% true (notably pain is dependant on your neromancy, so it could fall lower on the list, it actually does no damage with 0 necromancy)

And of course the actual weapon is more important than the brand most of the time (rarely a better brand might make a slightly worse base weapon better than a stronger base weapon with a worse brand) and there are lots of outlying cases where the general rule won't be correct (although it isn't usually far enough wrong that it is a serious problem)

And there are two non damage brands (antimagic and vampiric) which are both excellent, and which i would often use over a damaging brand in the appropriate circumstance.

Also drain, flaming, and freezing all do similar damage (freezing and flaming are actually identical) but i put them in the preference order i did because of their secondary effects, and how frequently they are resisted generally.

That's a fine writeup overall, but I'm still looking at the wiki noticing that the elec only procs 1/3 of the time, else you get nothing. And, for example, I can't think of how many fights I've seen wands with a 33% chance or even 50% chance completely fail to affect their targets over more than 3 consecutive rolls.

It may well be true that the overall damage is generally higher, but I do like consistency and you're only going to average out (on average) in fights that definitely require at least 3 swings -- and several multiples of 3 if you wanted to be really safe. By the time it gets to even vaults, when I'm usually able to be considering so many brands with much enchantment too, there's usually also min delay and at least 25+ Str... I'm looking at ogres and yaktaurs dying in one or two swings. So aren't we talking about rather small margins as well?

Not trying to be annoying, I'm just trying to understand why my results with electrocution didn't satisfy me all that much in the past while freezing did most of the time. This game I have from +4 to +7 slaying (with 2 rings) so far so it's so far kind of moot as I've torn through Depths pretty quickly anyway.

Re: Trove reporting

When talking about consistency don't forget about damage rolls. If you rolled 5 damage with flaming axe and it got reduced to 2 by AC, you will deal 2 damage and then 0-1 from brand, that's 2-3 damage total. If you rolled 5 damage with electro axe and it got reduced to 2 by AC, you will deal 2 damage and then 33% chance to deal 8-21 damage. Electro brand has the same 33% chance even if your initial damage was completely prevented by AC so it becomes even better than other brands vs high AC targets.

Re: Trove reporting

I guess it depends a lot on what sort of targets you are more concerned about. I tend to see the axes' main strength as crowd control, so I like the idea of slowing a lot of snakes/draconians a lot... I also really enjoy having something "special"
to deal with fire and ice dragons/giants and the like.

Other than adding that, I can't account for past issues except to assume I had some bad rolls with elec at bad times...

Still, having one more raw damage axe would be ideal for single target fights too... But by the time I get to battle axes, I'm often picking up maces and/or tridents for the worst single targets also, with cross-training. (Though not so much in this particular game where slaying keeps showing up... Right now, I'm wishing for more gold to get a ring with rF+, +Blink +6 Slay!)

EDIT: After completing Depths/Elf and looking at Crypt and more generally undead/demonic stuff down the road anyway, used more scrolls found to rebrand the Draining again. A couple took it back to electrocution, so can rotate freezing and elec axes to suit the mood now! :lol:

EDIT (2): Had a pretty good run with +7 elec battleaxe in Slime, albeit with +6 slaying on board. Went thru patrols smoothly and was even quick on TRJ and friends (a good thing, since also still wearing Harm lol).

Re: Trove reporting

The thing is that at about a theoretical "median weapon" Elec would do as much damage as flaming/freezing, with lower base damage weapons being better with elec, and higher base damage ones being better with flaming/freezing. The thing is, the "median weapon" is somewhere around a min delay +9 great mace with 24 fighting and 30 Str*.

*(This is an estimate based off of some old Fsim I ran compairing brands. I may be a bit off)

Now I'm just confused... Did you get this right, or did you mean to say it the other way around?

(Although this is starting to feel like an Advice thread maybe, but hey it's Crazy Yiuf anyway.)

I went through the late stages with a lot of elec (whenever holy or freeze weren't obviously called for) and was pretty happy with it, too in the event. Used freezing against OOFs and went through them pretty quick.

No, that's about right, he's saying the "middle point" where freezing/flaming catch up to elec is at a +9 great mace with min delay, 24 fighting and 30 str, anything lighter/less damaging than that and elec does more damage on average (significantly more the less damaging the weapon) you'd have to have a significantly stronger weapon (or significantly higher strength) for freezing/flaming to start to work out to be more damage on average.

So your GSC-weilding ogre with 35 str, probably will do a bit more damage with a GSC of freezing than one of elec, of course at that point everything gets smooshed into a fine red paste regardless of what your brand is, so it just doesn't matter, once you get to the point where your average damage with freezing/flaming is higher than elec, your average damage is already so ridiculously high, that quibbling over a couple more points of overkill isn't going to mean diddly squat for your chances of winning.

For all practical purposes, in the places where it matters how much damage you do, you can treat elec as always better than freezing/flaming (with the usual caveats about resistance)

Now stonychips claims he would rather have his bonus brand damage more consistently applied even if it means lower the overall average (since elec's damage is much more inconsistent), which is a perfectly reasonable viewpoint, although I'd point out that since your *base* damage is inconsistent, and flaming/freezing damage is based on the base damage, there isn't a lot of difference in overall consistency of damage done between elec and freezing/flaming (both are fairly inconsistent)

That cleared it up I think. I did find the elec at least as good (although by this time it was getting up to around +8) by the end, still with only 22-26 Str (some annoying item penalties most of the time in the event). Although it's been a game with a whole lot of slaying and harm on top of it, so things were going really quick anyway.

Re: Trove reporting

I was actually on the way up to the exit with the Orb in hand when I remembered that a trove had spawned in my game and I thought of this thread. It was probably not my brightest idea ever to investigate it for the sake of reporting at that point, but things never got too hairy beyond a couple of unremarkable pan lords spawning while I was identifying things.

For the entry fee of 15 scrolls of teleportation:

a - [Trove] the ring "Etomikoqi" {Wiz MP+9 Dex+7 Slay-5}
b - [Trove] the ring of the Sunfish {MR- AC+3 Int+3 Stlth+}
c - [Trove] a +3 ring of protection
d - [Trove] a scroll of immolation
e - [Trove] a +2 ring of protection
f - [Trove] a glowing war axe
g - [Trove] a glowing hand axe
h - [Trove] glowing pearl dragon scales
i - [Trove] the ring "Unaggol" {rC+ Slay+5}

...and a fair amount of gold lying around as well. The ring and pearl dragon scales are quite nice, at least, though I obviously don't have much room to make any use of them on the Orb run.

Re: Trove reporting

Trove on D:14..
More mediocre this time.

Ticket: Lose all piety (I was running out of spell slots for Vehumet anyway!)

Whites
Ring of Ojomigg {Str+5 Int+3}
+0 hat “Rozown” {Regen+}
- 6 hat “Julisoorch” {rF+, Dex+7} ...
The amulet of Wiaxtunt {*Slow +Rage rF+++ Dex+5}
Amulet “Mitek” {Spirit *Corrode +Fly rElec Int-2}
Amulet “Wezenn” {Regen+ Str-4, Int+8}
A crystal spear (dammit, a hand weapon not the spell)

Blue
A glowing shortbow
A runed flail
A runed ring mail

Consumables
A potion of brilliance (yay)
A scroll of amnesia (useful!)
3 fruits (identifying stuff makes people peckish?)
17 arrows

AND
358 gold

Was stuck between a Spider entrance chock full of tarantella in the open (with low MR) and going to Elf with no digging to deal with an entry full of grated magi, or Vaults.... Chose Vaults where, a single potion of resistance for Nikola would have helped me more than nearly all of these. :roll: The Int amulet/ring wasn't bad, but there was a more interesting amulet with similar Int already in shops -- albeit pricey.

Re: Trove reporting

Price was lose all piety. Almost nothing because I hadn't hit 1* yet after joining.

  Code:
 a +4 amulet of reflection
 the ring "Kaar" {rF- Int+3 Dex+6}
 a +2 ring of evasion
 the cursed ring "Moniukle" {rPois Dex-3}
 a ring of protection from fire
 a +3 ring of strength
 a ring of protection from magic
 an uncursed ring of flight
 a +5 ring of evasion
 the ring of Cowardice {Int+6 SInv}
 the ring of the Postmodern Coins {rPois rN+ Stlth+}
 the ring of Istryawa {rF+ rN+ Int+4}
 an uncursed ring of fire
 a +1 ring of protection
 a cursed -2 ring of slaying

Not bad for an OP on D:10, but the amulet is useless because I already found this
  Code:
the amulet of Doubts {Reflect Int+4 Dex+4 SH+5}

Re: Trove reporting

Price: 5 potions of resistance. HOGl^Beo had rF++, rC+++, rElec, and rPois from armor and jewelry in Zot and six such potions when I remembered the trove.
  Code:
phial of floods
randart scimitar
crystal ball of energy
meat ration
glowing trident
glowing battleaxe
glowing halberd
wand of iceblast
amulet {Spirit rElec rF+ Int-2}
amulet {Regen+ rC+}
ring of wizardry
I'd been using an amulet {RegenMP +Inv rElec MR+} for the rElec, having boots with +Inv and four pips of MR+. I think going to three pips of MR+ is worth it to get Spirit on a melee character, so good trove.

Is that 3 pips worn or 3 pips total? If it is 3 pips total it isn't worth risking A-lich Paralysis for spirit.

Re: Trove reporting

Price: +6 demon trident. My DSWz has a decent artifact weapon so I was ready to use 6 ?EW on a +0 demon trident once I got them collected.
  Code:
 c - an amulet of reflection
 d - an uncursed ring of positive energy
 e - the ring of Jacuh {rElec rPois Int+4}
 f - an amulet of reflection
 g - a +5 ring of strength
 h - an amulet of the gourmand
 i - a ring of protection from fire
 j - a -3 ring of evasion
 k - an uncursed ring of magical power
 l - a +2 ring of evasion
 m - an amulet of magic regeneration
 n - a ring of flight
 p - a ring of flight
 q - an uncursed amulet of harm
 L - the ring "Loaphudo" (left hand) {*Contam rF+ MP+9 Int+8}

The only thing I took to use was Loaphudo which replaced an {rF+ Int+5 Dex+4} ring I had.
