Loosing my poor 100 eyed mind

Ever since formicids were released I have tried getting a successful win, but you know how the story goes. I'm losing faith in my favorite race! I just wanna hit things with claymores while holding large shields and wearing crystal plates, is that too much to ask?

Re: Loosing my poor 100 eyed mind

OP I realize now you meant "losing" but I enjoyed your thread title much more when I thought you were a cosmic hell-beast who was finally "loosing" his über-iron bonds in his interstellar crystal prison and then decided that the first people he would inform are a bunch of roguelike playing weirdos.

Anyways, I dunno, try great-maces?

Are maces just really the best weapon class in this game? My poor ant will never lay a glimpse on the plutonium sword of dreams...

Re: Loosing my poor 100 eyed mind

I feel your pain. Everytime I try a race I really like the idea of doing 'X' with I wont get any of the equipment required to make it happen. So i'll go try something completely different and the game will generate early artifacts of awesomeitude for the char I stopped trying.

My formics in particular end up being runs where the game just wont generate two-handed weapons until it's forced to. I tended to use blunt for my bugs, while a claidhmore would surely be awesome, I dont think i've ever actually seen one, in something like 400 runs. Dire flail will usually drop early though, orc wariors, wights etc, and I do like the great mace when it eventually shows up in the hands of an ettin or orc knight. The 2h maces do deal big damage numbers and are awesome for high AC targets, I usually prefer eveningstar if I can get it to run with a shield, but there the bug has no worries.

Of course if the weapon does drop then i'll find nothing heavier than chain and nothing larger than a buckler.

I guess the point is that it's dangerous starting characters with a set goal of a particular weapon/equip setup, especially when the pieces you need are all rare. Crystal plate often wont generate at all in a given game, likewise the claidh. And large shields I sometimes have to wait to Vaults or Snake 4/5 for. I kill far more characters that are 'determined' in some way like this than the ones I start with little plan and adapt to the drops.

Hydras aren't faster than you unless you're a naga or you're under Chei, so they're really only as dangerous as you want them to be if you fight them instead of running away before they get next to you.

Then you find a flaming axe or something in orc or use a goddamn mace to bash it to death, which you should be able to survive unless you're doing swamp far too early.

Have you been paying attention? I don't use maces regularly. Been trying hundreds of games with long blade. On the topic of maces, what is with damage types in this game? The wiki has crashing and piercing and all that, but what do they mean to the game?

Other than slashing weapons cut off hydra heads (which will regrow twofold if the weapon's not flaming) and some flavor messages, nothing.

Nothing prevents you from just using a weapon with low skill or no skill to kill hydras if it's blunt (e.g. an elec whip) or flaming. Wands or just dealing more damage than they regenerate with a big long blade tend to work just as well or better, though.
Apart from hydras, damage types are irrelevant (they affect what a vorpal-branded weapon is called).

Speaking of faith, try worshipping Zin. Zin's powers are a great complement to formicids, IMO. Under Vitalization, you're immune to pretty much everything but damage, and Imprison/Sanctuary are two of the best escape abilities in the game while being fully compatible with stasis.

Also, Lugonu, but that's much harder to find in the early dungeon.

Re: Loosing my poor 100 eyed mind

Interesting...I've never thought of Zin for a formicid. In theory it's a great combo...so many wasted god abilities on formicid with the stasis. I have tried Logonu I think, but random blinks don't help too too much early game. It's something to think about some more.

Re: Loosing my poor 100 eyed mind

Random blinks allow escape from any speed 10 melee monster (iguanas, jellies, ogres, orc warriors, etc.). If you a formicid, you can't ?blink, teleport or haste away. Granted, if you end up to one of these unable to kill it it was probably an avoidable mistake, but it happens, and also, you can take bigger risks in attacking them if you know you can blink away if things don't go as planned.

As a kid I never thought that such a concept like "hard game" exist.
I always thought that each game was carefully tested as it is passable or not.
So, when I failed in games, I just thought "I'm not good enough".

Bah, in the 90s most of the arcade games had more than 3 letters, that actually started sometime in the 80s, now the early 80s and late 70s games, those were the ones that never had more than 3 letters....
