The problem with skills

The major issue with skills as I see it is that turning them on is a no-brainer. The game simply isn't fun without them. The fact of the matter is that some of us want to embrace a skilless playstyle and Crawl is not a particularly accomodating game for us.

Hopefully the devs will realise that in a community driven game such as this, skills ought to be optional.

Re: The problem with skills

I don't see a problem here. I had a character who didn't enter skills screen (and died during orb run).

Edit. It used auto training (not manual) of course.

  Code:
+ Level 1.1 Fighting
+ Level 10.8 Dodging
 + Level 6.3 Stealth
 O Level 27 Spellcasting
 + Level 10.5 Conjurations
 + Level 2.3 Charms
 + Level 3.4 Summonings
 + Level 21.9 Necromancy
 + Level 6.4 Translocations
   Level 2.6 Transmutations
 + Level 5.6 Ice Magic
 + Level 1.8 Air Magic
   Level 1.4 Earth Magic
 + Level 13.7 Poison Magic

Re: The problem with skills

^ Yeah, but those skills were still on. You didn't have the option to turn *all* of them off.

Open a new game and try to turn off all skills. The fascist skill menu screen won't let you play unless you have skill points going somewhere.

Re: The problem with skills

^ well, you can train only stealth or something useless for the whole game. justify having 27 stealth as the mosters ignoring you because you are so weak.
my posts are to be read in a mildly playful tone, with a deep, sexy voice.

Ugh, but then I would be stealthy. I don't want to be anything.

Learn a weapon skill without ever using the weapon (just have it in inventory), Make sure you don't cross train.

Re: The problem with skills

Remove the orb. It's too much of a no-brainer as everyone who wins has it.
