How did Harold explode and then not only groan, but collapse?

How did Harold explode and then not only groan, but collapse?

For some reason the death speech lines are triggered after the creature dies, and exploding still triggers a speech opportunity.

Well, the way I open a pillowcase is to hold it by the corners of the pillowcase opening and kinda shake it a bit, I'm not exactly sure how one would do that with an axe to a kobold, but I'm sure however it happens, it'd be brutal.
