Multiply all HP and damage by 10. No actual effect on gameplay, but "just got hit for 500" sounds more epic than "just got hit for 50."

The gods are always trying to murder your character. And each other. And also impregnate various random fauna in the dungeon.

You begin at D15 with a level 12 character. Your journey up to that point is later told through flashbacks.

crawl is already epic, character can fight without a break infinitely.
Anyway, here is my idea. We need some wonders to make every character feel unique.
After reaching Depths 3 a random skill is picked and game announces that you have a huge talent in the skill. Some examples:
  • Polearms allow you to reach an extra tile (3 tiles away instead of standard 2)
  • Killing a monster with Short Blades triggers an effect similar to Song of Slaying but without any noise (stacks)
  • Killing a monster with Axe heals you for some HP
  • Killing a monster with Long Blade temporarily increases your AC by 1 (stacks, duration similar to Song of Slaying)
  • You can use Giant Spiked Club
  • You can use Large Shield and SH value is doubled
  • Ice Magic spells cost 50% mana less (rounded up)
  • Translocation spells: you are immune to miscast effects and have spell failure rate halved
  • Shroud of Golubria never ends and Passage of Golubria is always placed where you are trying to put it. A book with these 2 spells is instantly gifted
  • You get 2 undead instead of 1 for all Necromancy spells (Animate Skeleton/Dead, Death Channel, Simulacrum)
  • Charms: all dual school spells become single school spells (so Deflect Missiles does not need Air, Death's Door does not need Necromancy etc.)
  • Your AC equals to AC+EV, EV is set to 0, Stone Skin can be combined with Ozocubu's Armour
  • Your EV equals to AC+EV, AC is set to 0. Phase Shift effect is doubled.

Yes, last 2 items were special and probably too bad because they don't provide any choice.

Edit. Though my last 15 runer had AC below 25 and I didn't have any serious problems because of EV 50+ and DMsl. I suspect EV 70 can be too easy even with AC 0.

A pretty good number of attacks ignore EV while checking AC, though. Also it is more likely to get one bad roll rather than multiple ones.

If you get really high values of EV, yet you have AC that sucks, or vice-versa, then you really just get to a point where you want more of the thing you have little of. Somewhere between Vaults and Depths (at the latest) bad EV starts to really suck because you get drained and hit with other add-on effects all the time, while bad AC sucks at basically any point of the game due to damage spikes, and then on top of that there are quite a few attacks that check AC but ignore EV (including "explosion"-type attacks).

25 AC is quite good for end-game on a more or less "normal" (humanoid) character, assuming EV is your primary defense and thus higher. One thing can be better than the other, it is just a drag when one of the two really sucks (like having EV or AC of around 8 or 10 at end game). In such situations, regardless of the other value, you are often going to be in for a headache.

There's a big difference between 25 AC and 0 AC, good EV or not.
