Sorry about the confusion, I just looked up the character, and I found it on D:2, and it was a dagger. It was quite a while since I had the character, and I kinda forgot over time. Same for the Sword of Power, and the Sword of Jihad..

A cloak of preservation is always a sweet find, doubly so on D:1 :).

I found over a hundred rocks on D:1 the other day.

If you don't think this a great find, then you haven't been playing Earth Elementalists :D

Not D:1, but D:2 - my SETm just found an altar of Chei, and right next to it - a stack of six runed javelins. The game just knows my needs well :).

There are those things that are not very special in themselves, but it's really sweet when they match your needs well.

Recent examples for me are an amulet of rage with a Minotaur Gladiator, and a short sword of electrocution with a spriggan reaver.

Well - for the particular games, those are good early finds, even if only for the purpose of general ranting :).
They mostly end up in saying "The RNG giveth, the RNG taketh away. most of the time, it just taketh." anyway :).

A ring of magical power on my Halfling Warper. That bonus mp is an absolute godsend early on when your base pool is barely enough for a single blink.

It also made things interesting on D:4 where, upon neglecting Spellcasting and using blink excessively, an orc priest had me pinned inside the temple where, at 50% hp, I was starving and out of permafood.

Re: Good finds on D:1

I was lucky enough that one of my three unided potions happened to heal me up to around 80% hp and provide enough nutrition to end the state of starvation. Throw into the mix my only potion of might and I managed to take down the priest.

Thankfully the priest left a corpse that was butchered into four chunks, otherwise I may have still lost regardless of the outcome of the fight with the priest.

I was sitting on the D2 up-stairs, about to read ID a few scrolls in attempt to scroll ID my one ring so far.

The first scroll I read was teleport. The second was identify though- and the ring turned out to be cTele. How fortuitous is that?

Potion of Gain Dexterity. Twice in two different games. A shame both of them were part of my current string of "can't get past D3" runs.
The best strategy most frequently overlooked by new players for surviving: not starting a fight to begin with.

Let's see, gold dragon armor...check.
Ring of slaying? +3, +6, and I think was on D:1. I know it was an early game find at least.
Recently though, I've gotta say... an enchanted dagger of speed. Was playing a kenku, who found a -1, +3 one, and shortly after saw a pack of gnolls. I figured that was the end of it...until I wiped out all three of them plus a bat and went from lvl 1 to 3. Now I see why everyone loves that brand. Sadly Crawl finished the job with a kobold with a potion of rage and short sword of electricity (19 freaking damage! Can you say overkill?). Currently running another one with a +2, +2, who is eagerly awaiting either a cruel and unusual punishment, or just another really, really stupid death.

Re: Good finds on D:1

Not on D:1, but D:4 I found these things with my CeMo:

a - the +4 pair of gloves of the Commoners {+Blink +Inv rPois rC+}
x - the +5 ring mail of Maesa {rN+ Acc+3}
g - a ring of protection from fire (right hand)
r - an amulet of warding (around neck)

This totals at rF+ rC+ rN++ rPois - quite a beautiful bunch of resists, especially for D:4. AC 15 is nothing to sneeze at either.

I can't remember ever getting GDA early. I think I recall finding artifact Crystal Plate early on once. It killed me via stat death when I put it on.

My best D1 finds lately were a ring of magical power and a sling of flame.

Re: Good finds on D:1

I get lucky on D:1 quite often

I often find some sort of dragon armor on D:1, recently I found dragon armor on D:1 three times in a row

More recently, I found a potion of experience on D:1, two games in a row

A while back, I remember finding an amulet of the gourmand and a ring of sustenance on D:1

Not necessarily D:1, but I once found a Necronomicon on D:7

One time on D:2 I found a potion of mutation that game me slow metabolism, carnivore 1, and spit poison, although Crawl obviously saw how generous it was being to me and it made my next un-id'ed potion a potion of cure mutation.

I'm surprised how often I find mutation and cure mutation at the same time. I suspicion there are vaults that contain both potions, or something like that.

I have only seen one GDA in all my experience playing this game, I can't imagine finding them on D:1 three games in a row

+2, +3, and +5 rings of intelligence on D1. KoHu, unfortunately.

MDFi: +2 dwarven gloves, +1 dwarven splint mail on D1, great luck with dwarven weapons and gear. AC 21 by Lair, entered the nice, compact bailey with lots of goblins and kobolds throwing axes that couldn't touch him. The Orc Knight, however, with his great mace of draining, touched him just a little too hard -- he would've had him the next turn.

Ditto. I swear my SpEn found a +8 +8 ring of slaying. I think it was D:1 but it may have been as deep as D:4. Yes, it died later. I was too new to the game to realize it was might be the single strongest item ever generated by the RNG!

A stack of 12 +3 Silver Javelins on D1. Unfortunately they were on a 5 STR Deep Elf Necromancer and hence basically used his entire weight limit single handedly. Still awesome though.

Also seen Steam Dragon Armour, but not Gold. Oh, and two Cursed Rings of Wizardry once, literally next to each other.

Finally managed to find a gold dragon armour on D:2...with my DDNe. Oh well. Also found a nice randart shield on D:5, in the hands of an orc: +3, rF+, and +2/+3 slaying. I couldn't resist using it, even though it took a while to train Shields up enough to still have decent spellcasting.

Not such a great find in itself, but nice in sequence.

My previous MdFi got ambushed by two snakes and died of poison shortly after them. The next had an armour of poison resistance right in the starting vault.
