Bad judgement by Asterion

My KoAK was fighting Asterion in Shoals. I took it on the safe side and quaffed haste, might and agility just to be sure. The bastard went invis so I used a scroll of fog to see it's position. Killed the spectral weapons as they got summoned. Finally Asterion decided to blast me even though I was next to him. The resulting fireball killed Asterion (I had rf+ and still lots of hit points). A bit of an anticlimax.

I think such death can make sense. For example: Asterion has 1HP remaining and maxed roll from the explosion can kill PC.
I have an impression that Deep Elf Sorcerers tend to use Hellfire in similar situations too, they are more likely to use it when they are low on HP because they are about to die anyway and it's the most optimal way to deal high damage to player. (Probably clustering illusion though).

Asterion doesn't have fireball as a spell, he has Major Destruction. Probably just a bit of bad luck on his part.

Yes, I wonder if Asterion even considers the possibility of getting fireball out of major destruction in such a situation. Probably not. Anyway I'm positively sure that even maxed roll could not have killed me.

Have you considered that maybe you are a bad judgement and that Asterion rules a kingdom so he's probably pretty wise even with mino int that makes it a bit hard to do all that fireball math under pressure so we shouldn't judge him for that ok?!!...!!

What is Asterion's int? What's its level? Did it get stat raises? Did it get to choose which stat to raise? Did it raise int? So many questions...

Anyway, I bet it was just that Makhleb saw Asterion was losing the fight and decided to make it go away with a bang.

Deep elf sorcerer does not use hellfire when it's next to you. Deep elf high priests and draconian zealots/scorchers are the ones who use hellfire burst even on melee range.
