Sort of trying to be constructive edit: I think they look good in vacuum, but they don't really fit "Crawl style" - yeah, I know Crawl doesn't really have a style because of different contributors and all, but still, it just sticks out to me (like some of your new monster icons). I would be interested somewhat in looking at a full Crawl tileset made by you, but with current tileset I think it'd be nice to make tiles that at least pretend to look somewhat similar.

since sar is being all constructive and shit and making me look like some sort of CAVEMAN

I initially assumed these were tiles for three different spells: tornado, some ice aoe stuff and some poison aoe stuff.
Note that this already is a bit bad; there are several spells both in ice and poison that are "some aoe stuff" and these images could represent any such spell. It is true there isn't as much freedom in crawl tiles as one could wish for when it comes to dealing with things that demand room to artistic concession, but it is also true one can still have a bit of usability when it comes to icon design -ideally without crippling the artistic side of the piece.

To illustrate the problem with not adhering to usability at least a bit I had to check the filenames. As it turns out the ice/poison tiles wouldn't be different stabs at the cloud spells but wildy different spells themselves. Well, looking at them I don't think they show that very well and that seems like important information for the tiles to convey.
For example, the old tiles for chillcloud and pcloud used similar and distinctive artwork to create a recognizable link between them, based on their actual effects. Of course one could also say they also didn't exploit their artistic potential very much (I would disagree in this particular example), or perhaps that while they did make for distinct and recognizable icons the rest of the set around them did not match in terms of adhering to a certain logic between spell effect and visual representation and thus didn't achieve so much.
That last thing I would be more inclined to agree with, although the spell icon reform does seem to seek keeping it a relative priority so that's pretty cool.

The tiles are meant for:

Tornado, Freezing Cloud, Glaciate, Poison Cloud, And Mephetic Cloud.

In that order. If you tried saving the images, the default names will be of the spells they are meant for. You could probably have already guessed that, but I figured I might as well create some additional clarity.
To all new players: Ignore all strategy guides posted on the wiki, ask questions in the Advice forum, players with lots of posts normally have the best advice.

For what it's worth, I like the cloud spell icons, particularly fcloud & meph; they're recognizably similar, but still quite distinct. Pcloud is cool, but the skull & crossbones is both unnecessary & unrecognizable, and it doesn't really match the style of the other cloud spells. All of them have the aforementioned problem of being much more detailed than the 'house style' (ontoclasm & roctavian's stuff): compare e.g.

Of course, 'extremely high detail' is the 'bloax style'. Whether or not the 'bloax style' makes sense in crawl is an open question!

...Also, I'm not really sure why glaciate looks like a tidal wave. (I'm informed this is intentional?)

imo the icon for glaciate should be a shotgun shooting ice even though shotguns haven't been invented yet because that's what makes me think of glaciate the most

and yes i did want to do something shotgunny for glaciate but then nothing really fit except a big ice avalanche but then it turned into a cool cloud/avalanche which was pretty cool

As a visual "artist" (I use the term loosely to be clear I make no $$$ off my work and have no particular work ethic with regard to creating stuff.) These icons look nice. I do think they lack a coherency but find a way to work with tiny icons so that they are both pretty and clear is not always so easily done. One thing regarding the "skull & crossbones" as has been said it is too pixelated but even were it larger it would probably dominate the icon. I'd say they are a good attempt and if you keep at it you will have something great. Maybe even enough to make a complete tileset. One thing I would suggest is work a little larger. Then you can reduce size as needed (though carefully).

I think they're gorgeous, and I'm pretty sure they're distinct enough that I'd be able to memorize what each one was for fairly quickly.
As an aside, Bloax, were you at all inspired by the spell icons from TES:Daggerfall? Couple of them really remind me of that style!

Does crawl support non-32x32 tiles non-buggily? Has anyone ever tested that?
It seems like the tile size is defined on lines 4699,4700 of enum.h, so with a little ImageMagick I might be able to test that later.
Some of the tiles don't match this setting (eg mon/unique/lernean_hydra* is 32x48)

I'm one of the few that still invoke the rites of the 90's everything-is-chrome trend, but no - I wasn't inspired by anything while making any of these (in fact I've never played Daggerfall).
And all of them were made within a single hour, so it's not like I really thought the design through, not that I usually do it in the first place.
