My latest dead wizard was on D:10 when he came across the entrance to the Orcish Mines. Battling his way through a company of orcs, warriors and priests (with some wights and a hippogriff thrown in for fun), he went down the hall of alcoves, past all the statues of Trog, and approached the distinctive (in tiles) entrance to the mines.

Turned out that the mine entrance was a mimic.

This should not be allowed for such a particularly important theme entrance that includes all its attendant monsters, IMO. Why would those orcs be guarding that entrance, then? Stupid, dirty, rotten trickery.

How would you find out what the trove wants without stepping on it? They don't list their requirement on sight...

Dungeon overview (ctrl o) will show it iirc.

If you're playing tiles, you can also right-click on the trove entrance. It will list the required entrance fee.

Mimics in Crawl are basically a tech demo for infinite human sadness and cruelty

Eh, nothing that wrong with it. Runes aren't consumed by anything, so.. Got the abyssal rune sooner than usual? seems manageable.

FR: 1/100 chance that when you get to the Orb it is actually a mimic and you made the whole trip to Zot:5 for nothing.

For the brief period where the orb chamber had variations you could get ravenous Orb mimics. I don't know if anyone ever died to one but I like to think so.

The trove thing is terrible and I hope it's been fixed, but I don't see any particular problem with this case. All it means is that you'll find Orc somewhere else.
