Sending messages while playing online?

Hi guys.

I am relatively new to pretty much all that is DCSS and very new to playing online. I received a msg from another player while playing online yesterday, how do I respond/send one back?

The easiest way is to press : and type a note which they'll be able to see. (And to send a message to someone else whose game you're watching, press m).

Don't you mean "_"? By default, m is used for the skills screen.

Right, _ is to read a message from somebody else, m is to send one while watching a game.

Is there any way of sending a message to someone while not watching their game? Or any way to see if someone is watching your game?
