CIP: More slaying?

I got a nice run going here, and whats even nicer is I just found a +5 slaying ring... But I don't know if it's worth the slot. What do you guys think?

My head says 'no' but my gut says 'yes'.

Usually I'd say the answer is always MOAR SLAYNG, but apparently without that ring of Tuna you'd only have 1 Str? I assume you're under some kind of effect but I'm not seeing it. Anyway, if you have a modicum of natural Str I'd wear slaying and only swap in Tuna when you need SInv.

I like how a character with 1 str (before the -2 mutation) was carrying around a +12 CPA because you never know. Just in case he happened to suddenly gain 20 strength, he might switch to AC. Seems plausible.

The problem is it's a completely ridiculous removal of an already functionally implemented system in the name of decreased micro-management. We'd also be able to decrease micro-management by removing the food system entirely, or by giving people up/down stairs access anywhere in the level like a formicid on crack-- this would all increase ease of play, but it would also be completely ridiculous and make the game objectively worse. Sure, it's a videogame, and I can believe in magic as a concept, but I can't believe a Spriggan can carry 104 large stones or what have you. Especially when it didn't use to be that way. But then again, this is running into thread derailment territory.

It happened in Crawl Light. Instead of spells costing hunger, they cost 'contam' on a contam bar that would go down IIRC with gaining xp.

(Also stair access wherever you want it would majorly impact game play in addition to sometimes being convenient, whereas carrying capacity only impacted game play in unusual situations (like sudden banishment) and in extreme cases of low strength. Banishment is already something you don't want to happen to you, and having very low values for any stat is something you are already discouraged from having because being reduced to 0 strength is staggeringly bad and likely to kill you if it happens. So, many of the aspects of carrying capacity that really affected game play were largely redundant, while also being a huge inconvenience, *much* more so than having to move toward one of three staircases or a hatch when traveling amongst already explored areas. Coincidentally, removing carrying capacity also removed a lot of the need to travel amongst already explored areas in order to retrieve stuff from the floor, which has always had infinite strength, as it were, when it comes to weight capacity.)

Excuse me for my impudence but, bullocks. The removal of a weight restriction effects almost every race in a different way, which has not been accounted for yet in the balance. Trolls used to have a huge carry weight advantage, tempered by their unique incentive to carry burdensome stones- which required trolls to choose between a strength build for throwing mastery, or dex for better evasion. It has been pointed out how vampires have been dramatically affected by the unstated boon to bat form. Spriggans, kobolds, Halflings, all of these had unique carry weight concerns that they would be forced to deal with using stat distribution or suffer increased burden (literally and metaphorically). I could go on how this has not been addressed at all, I could also go on about how None of These Changes Had to Happen At All. You developers are making needless busy work for yourselves when you could put your copious talents to far more rewarding programming and game expansion concerns.

How about more content instead of less content in the new editions?

Sorry if I'm derailing too hard.

Also, as for the food system, I was actually just drawing for things that could be removed to increase ease but wouldn't make any sense. The idea of endless streamlining will lead us down a very dark rabbit hole.

Well, Greyr ascended the character that this (initially) CIP thread was about, so I wouldn't worry too much about off topic in this case. The train has already come to rest at its final destination, and all passengers and crew disembarked. Derailing is not a major worry. (EDIT: Well okay I'll move it to CYC; Greyr's character is now in Valhalla and as a treat gets to enjoy our wide-ranging, interesting discussion.)

I would not say that there were never any cases wherein the old weight limits gave rise to meaningful (non-trivial) tension and decisions. The problem is that, perhaps with the exception of a character with extremely (and unnecessarily) low strength, you could bypass >90% of the general effect that carrying capacity had, simply by scrupulously (and tediously) replacing consumables you use (or that got destroyed) by backtracking to them. So in effect your weight limit was only a limit for those discrete stretches of time that exist between two good 5ings or autotravels or whatever.

There are specific things, like bat form, for which weight limits more often did something, because they were often too difficult or bothersome to get around, but my point is that, if you want to balance narrow, specific, discrete things like large rocks or bat form, then weight is a bad overarching system to have in place, given that you can just adjust those specific things on a case by case basis.

Removing item destruction and weight limits represent a major overhaul and some specific things are still in need of adjustment and rebalancing, I'm sure; carrying large numbers of evocables is something that was mentioned in GDD just recently, in fact. I trust that the dev team will figure that stuff out, moving forward. In the mean time, I'll enjoy the fact that my decisions regarding stat allocation are being made on the basis of what I judge to help my character's survival the most, not on the basis of avoiding the annoyance caused by an overly broad and inelegant system.

The vast majority of weight never came from consumables like potions and scrolls (maybe food, but the modern system still entirely requires food stashing due to limited item slots) It came from high value items, like weapon swaps, wands, and misc envokables. It's really easy to say inventory weight management was useless by dismissing the decision making factors that go into it as trivial, but are they really trivial decisions?. Consider this an appeal to authority, but almost Every single fantasy game anywhere near this genera has some sort of weight system within. Some have more forgiving weight systems, some have more stringent, they all have them. All (about 95%) of tabletop games even have inventory management, and that requires papers, pencils, math, and all other kinds of unsavory things. It's an extremely important decision deciding what you're bringing with you at any given time as your "loadout" or "Kit". In many runs, especially for melee characters, deciding which envokables and throwables to bring is one of the greatest customizable aspects of your character, otherwise it's mostly RNG sifting and tab+o+c+e. I think it's kind of scary how good bots are at playing this game- to me that shows how overly simplified and procedural it's getting.

You're argument is kind of playing into mine-- yes, maybe a few of the features removed could be replaced with improved versions, but they were already OK (and could of been refined instead of removed), and as you admitted the developers have created a mountain of work for themselves with trying to balance the systems they just messed with. Weight capacity made strength useful for all classes- now you're seeing (proof pudding present in thread) people dancing around with minimum strengths, optimal dex, and maxed Int because the system is rapidly becoming a procedural checklist on the way to becoming a buff+tab+o monstrosity or a 2 spell apocalypse wizard. Egghead characters need a (Small) incentive for strength- I also believe beefy characters need a (Small) incentive for int- if just to make randomly generated stats feel less like a complete let down. But that's beside my main point. You're seeing trolls walking around with 102 large stones. Do you think completely removing all aspects of ammo management, scavenging, and Plan-B improvisation for streamlined ease is a good trade? It feels like I'm carefully explained to how wonderful the new dictionary is because it's three times as thin, and it has the Ministry of Truth stamp of approval.

By snipping away at all these "trivial" decisions, they are rapidly degrading this game into something that's fit mostly for some sporadically played mobile game, not the careful trek through a foreboding and dangerous dungeon I'm used to. If this game wants to become something completely different than what it was, fine, but that doesn't mean the changes were for the better just because it's following some design philosophy or another to it's absolute extremes.

As long as I'm soapboxing, I'll also point out how the removal of things like corrosion, item destruction, and even sickness from some enemies (why ruin Komodos?) devolves the decision making path for every single fighting encounter to "Will this encounter put me at 0 health, or not?". Sure you might have to worry about using a buff here or an escape there, but if you can tab em', you needn't even mind yourself with em'. The games getting really easy to be lazily played- I'm not seeing the "important" decisions that are supposedly being introduced to replace the "trivial" decisions we're rapidly chucking out, are you? What new decisions have we been granted by these new editions? Can you forecast any good ones on the way? Or just more balancing to get back to where we were (but with less)? What makes this even worse is that there ARE Fantastic improvements in this new edition- but I'm just not seeing nearly enough pros to justify all these cons. Things like removing the ability to actually equip Beoghite orcs just to offer a randomized "streamlined" alternative is a terrible spackle on the true flaws that Beogh worship has. I'm seeing cases like this all over the place. You can call it needless quibbling or just plain reaching for the nostalgia glasses, but I just wanted to let the community at large know that this game is rapidly "evolving" into something I'm having less fun playing. Which is why I rant.

Weight wasn't OK for a reason mentioned already countless times. Okay, I'll repeat it once more: levels are persistent. You can backtrack. This doesn't apply only to a few areas, but it does apply to the majority of the game.

I mean, I do feel oddly nostalgic about certain "bad" aspects of the game that was removed (I'm in the minority, though). But weight was just disgusting. You could easily win a Str 4 DEFE (I know it because I did it) with 15 runes and a couple of Zigs. Pump Int, storm dudes, stop 3-4 times per floor and spend some time deciding what to drop. That got tiresome fast. Later, I was reluctant to play stuff like Sp or Ko or Ha because their base Str was crap. If I did, I would always pump Str, and still at some point I would find myself starting at the inventory screen, wondering how many potions of this and that should I drop. That wasn't a difficult task, but it wasn't very fun either.

There were lots of worries about how *exactly* to handle experience allocation when the need for victory dancing was removed. This created more work for the dev team, I guess, but I'm glad they took it upon themselves to fix a really terrible aspect of the game, and over a couple of versions they implemented a much better experience system.

There aren't "classes" in Crawl (that's not just semantic, Crawl's version of "classes" is also different from how "Every single fantasy game anywhere near this genre"), but putting that aside, strength is useful for a lot of characters, because wearing stuff that gives you good AC and casting spells at the same time is good, and doing more damage is good. The only stat that tends ever to be completely worthless is intelligence, actually, in that if you aren't casting spells, you just want enough to not have to worry about hitting 0 and getting brainless status, since brainless is really bad.

If you want to try to cut it with 3 strength or whatever, go for it, but it isn't a great idea, as people in this thread pointed out. But if people want to possibly threaten their character's survival by playing a certain way, that's fine. I'm glad that Crawl doesn't threaten the *player's* sanity by leaving stuff like victory dancing and weight capacity in the game.

You really should step off the soapbox, as you say, and try to take a more sober look at the game. Depths is exceedingly more dangerous and taxing than that section of old dungeon was. Rune lock often forces you to do difficult branches with limited resources. A lot of enemies have been added and, while I don't like all of them and I worry about bloat in the game, in this respect, it has made the game more difficult. God wrath can no longer be avoided through cheesy scummy methods, meaning that you can't input real-life player time in exchange for swapping around religions to suit your immediate needs. In terms of making Crawl a tough game that forces difficult decisions, all of these changes are about a million times more meaningful than the most meaningful effects of carrying capacity.

Hell, even with the specific thing you cited, corrosion... Man, have you *played* slime or Zot since corrosion changed? Because going from 36 AC to 6 in Zot when a bunch of yellow draconians are around is an order of magnitude scarier than having to swap around some equipment and maybe losing the equivalent of 4 or 5 enchant armor scrolls. And I got super-corroded in Zot precisely because I (foolishly) tabbed through a corridor that happened to have quite a few yellow dracs, because I underestimated new corrosion. I lived and ascended, but lesson learned. *Unlike* old corrosion, new corrosion forces you to be mindful of your play and be careful, because you are in a dangerous, forbidding dungeon, and there now exists a form of attack that meaningfully erodes your AC, and it will kill you if you don't pay it heed.

Well Crawl is essentially a classless RPG, "classes" here are just sets of skill and items. I'm pretty sure it's not the only classless fantasy RPG system out there, though!

Also Int drainers are the most common stat drainers by far (quasits drain Dex and I can't recall a Str drainer right now so maybe nothing even does that), so completely dumping Int actually can affect you negatively, especially since !restab doesn't insta-cure Brainlessness and it's a pretty awful status to have in Crawl.

Once you're ready to hop off the ol' soap box, you can pop over to the design subforum and use the search tool to determine why the changes you hate were made. Spoiler: other people who also care deeply about the game thought about these issues carefully, talked it over at length, and made arguments for a variety of options including leaving things as they were. The most convincing arguments were that many of these things you miss are just ways to irritate or interface-screw players, and not actually adding challenge or significant decisions.

Well first, why are we only talking about fantasy games near this genre? This is a roguelike, a genre with hundreds of games that we can compare it to. Here is a really short list of Roguelikes without weight: DoomRL, AliensRL, Powder, Pixel Dungeon, and a whole lot more.

Ahh, the old, let's pull something out of my ass trick. This is not true at all, bots are terrible at this game. The ones that win play extremely easy combos and some even revert to human control in certain circumstances.
