Roguelike(likes) in Steam Summer Sale

Hey guys, just letting you know that the following roguelikes and roguelikelike-likey games are on sale right now:

Desktop Dungeons http://store.steampowered.com/app/226620
Steam Marines http://store.steampowered.com/app/253630/
Don't Starve http://store.steampowered.com/app/219740/
X-Com Enemy Unknown http://store.steampowered.com/app/200510/
Frozen Synapse http://store.steampowered.com/app/98200/ (this is reaching, but basically if X-Com Enemy Unknown interests you you probably want to buy this too)
Risk of Rain http://store.steampowered.com/app/24882 ... 1_5_9__300
Teleglitch http://store.steampowered.com/app/23439 ... 1_5_9__300
FTL http://store.steampowered.com/app/212680/
Spelunky http://store.steampowered.com/app/239350/
Super House of Dead Ninjas http://store.steampowered.com/app/224820/ (Ok this one is really reaching, but I'm including it anyways because it's so cool)
Dungeons of Dredmor http://store.steampowered.com/app/98800 ... 307__307_1
Sword of the Stars: The Pit http://store.steampowered.com/app/23370 ... 307__307_2
Rogue Legacy http://store.steampowered.com/app/24160 ... 307__307_4
ToME4 http://store.steampowered.com/app/25968 ... 307__307_6 (so you get a discount on a game that's free anyway? sure ok)
Legend of Dungeon http://store.steampowered.com/app/23828 ... 307__307_8 (never heard of this one but I guess it's a roguelikelike)
Hack Slash Loot http://store.steampowered.com/app/20743 ... 07__307_10 (I hear this game is bad from one of my roguelike loving friends BUYER BEWARE and so on)
Dungeon of the Endless http://store.steampowered.com/app/24905 ... 07__307_12 (Early Access BUYER BEWARE. But it's like a roguelike / slash / tower defense thing and it seems really cool from watching a friend play it)
Quest of Dungeons http://store.steampowered.com/app/27005 ... 307__307_3 (never heard of but I guess it's a roguelike)
Wazhack http://store.steampowered.com/app/264160/ (it's goofy awesome 2D Nethack, give this one a look)
One Way Heroics http://store.steampowered.com/app/266210/ (The world's first autoscroller roguelike)
Magicite http://store.steampowered.com/app/268750/ (I have heard from a reliable source that this is a roguelike, but it looks more like off-brand Terraria to me, so ok)
Bionic Dues http://store.steampowered.com/app/238910/ ("Roguelikelike" with giant mechs, deterministic combat and high fatality rates, which is why you get 4 per mission~)
Dungeonmans http://store.steampowered.com/app/288120/ (Early access, has the notable distinction of really being a roguelike, spellcasters attack with FOOM)

Have fun, and remember, spend all your money on The Gaben

Xcom is not at all like Rogue. nor Moria, nor Angband nor Nethack, nor Adom, etc. It is a tbs with squad based tactics. It does have the game over aspect that Roguelikes are famous for, but it also has the techtree that 4x strategy games are notorious for and the missions/quests of RPGs. I do recommend it anyway because it can be gripping to try and keep your team alive and uninjured but keep in mind it isn't at all like DCSS, not merely because DCSS is free, better and harder.

I put it in the list because if you enjoy roguelikes because you like coming up with the best survival plans and tactical execution (note that there is more than one kind of 'roguelike enjoyment', which is why I qualify it, and also why the list feels like it's made up of two entirely different kinds of games), then you will enjoy X-Com Enemy Unknown because it emphasizes exactly that and is designed around Ironman style play, which it supports as an option out of the box.

Instead of connecting games by 'you do the same thing in them', connect them by 'they have a personality type in common that would enjoy both', and your networks will be deeper and richer.

I think that is a perfectly sensible way to link/list games together. But say that rather than roguelikes on sale. :) I approve of at least 10 of those games btw.

Re: Roguelike(likes) in Steam Summer Sale

When I'm not playing DCSS (that is my favourite game pretty much since I started playing it in 0.9) I'm playing something on steam (mostly Dota 2).
I know only desktop dungeon and x-com from your list and I can definetely recommend both of them, with desktop dungeon being the closest to a 10 minutes long DCSS game I know.
I'll take a look at all of them, thanks for the tip.

Re: Roguelike(likes) in Steam Summer Sale

I've got way, way more than my money's worth out of Bionic Dues, and I bought it on release, so I'd definitely recommend that one. It's not really "like rogue", of course, but you know what? There are other kinds of games that are also fun, and it's one of them.

Xcom is more like rogue than 75% of that list, for what it's worth.

Re: Roguelike(likes) in Steam Summer Sale

Just a reminder/heads up that there is already a thread in which people can debate the burning philosophical questions that underlie computer game classification:

https://crawl.develz.org/tavern/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12271&p=173136&hilit=roguelike#p173136

I know it is CYC and all but it would be nice if this thread could stick roughly to the topic of "cool games that resemble DCSS or other roguelikes to some degree, and which can be obtained for free or very cheaply."

it's basically "what if you took doomRL and then re-added all those bad roguelike tropes that doomRL avoided"

I don't really recommend it (seriously just play doomRL instead) but it's not awful.

around that age some friends and I stole a sack of cement from a house in construction and used it to make a small platform on some rocks near a tiny spit of sand we used to go to
it was terribly built and didn't last a year but hey

when i was 10 or so and walking home from school i saw this iron bar lying in a guy's garden, and i couldn't stop thinking about it. the next day i was very relieved to find it still there and i took it home and hid it from my parents. i don't know why they would have objected to me owning a piece of metal but i considered it a remote possibility and i needed that iron bar. i never did anything with it (i don't think you could do anything with it) and forgot about it a few hours later

I think you all might have slipped from roguelikes into point + click adventures a little bit.

Isn't taking stuff that appears completely useless and not finding a use for it afterwards (because it's completely useless) the exact opposite of what point 'n' click adventures are about?

Pointless genre semantics aside, FTL: Faster than Light is a really fun game and it's worth checking out. There's also a pretty good mod community for it.

Re: Roguelike(likes) in Steam Summer Sale

When I was 16 there was this huge tarp/tent besides a mall, it was used for events but currently it was closed.

I knew the layout from being there before to a comics-related event and remembered there was a beverages stall inside, and when I snuck in, I found the stall wasn't locked, it was only blocked by a stack of plastic chairs.

I removed the plastic chairs, got into the stall, and in the dark I groped around and found the fridge, full of beverage cans (when brought into the light they turned out to be energy drinks)

I kept sneaking in there and stealing energy drinks any time I went near the place, until that time when the police nearly caught me and a friend inside of it. We were going to watch some x-men movie and we missed the beginning because we had to mash 5 until the cops stopped giving a fuck and went away.

This one is more of a Spelunky-like and very shitty one at that. I advise against buying it. You just chop trees every game for the first 10 minutes. And die 15 minutes later because shops don't generate anything useful & you find 0 chests /healing items.

Same here :
Bought Magicite only to find out that it was a spelunky with a terraria-generated content, without any environment interaction (no bomb/rope a la spelunky, no digging a la terraria,...).

I really, really recommend One Way Heroics. It's a fantastic game with a very smart way to tell a story (if you liked Majora's Mask, you will like the way you must unfold its plot).

yeah you'll easily sink 10-20h into One way heroics.
I bought it a way back when it first came out and saw it on reddit, and now installed it again when i noticed they gave steam keys for earlier purchases. And sunk another good 10 hours on it.
