Do we want backgrounds to stop giving permanent stats?

Here's just one alternative to background stat distribution:
  • All species get innate +4 dex.
  • You get to pick a stat at character creation, and it gets a +4 boost.
  • You get to pick a stat to increase at levels 3, 5, 7, ..., 25, 27 instead of 3, 6, 9, ..., 24, 27. That adds up to 13 increases as opposed to 9.
  • Some backgrounds may still shift stats around a bit, e.g. Wz giving -1 str, +2 int, -1 dex.

Lets just get rid of species and backgrounds and everybody is a human wanderer. Except if you pick wizard, then you get -1 str, +2 int, -1 dex. :roll:

While I don't think removing stats from background is worthwhile, I did find it odd that the starting step of this proposal was give everyone 4 dex. So looking up the background stat allocations, it turns out that everyone gets either 4 or 5 dex with only wizard (3), monk (7), and assassin (6) as exceptions. Everyone else seems so...average :P Note that this isn't a problem, just found it interesting.

Fighters, skalds, fire elementalists, hunters, gladiators, warpers...all within one point of dex.
