I agree with the topic. Xom is the only God that makes starting as a monk pointless (and even a "bad" decision since you start out with less equipment). Xom seems like he ought to be interested in luring the aspiring Monk away from the other gods with shiny trinkets.

So I think the first time you see a Xom altar in a game, he should gift you something with a high chance of being useful, and say "join me, and you can keep it!" Then the item fizzles after maybe 10d20 turns if you haven't started Xom worship.

This should always happen for a Monk. It should happen maybe one in a hundred times for people with no God, and about one in 50 times for people who have some other God. It could either have a chance any time you see a Xom Altar for the first time, or just on the first one in the game.

I like the idea but is it wise to code it? Not simple to do i suppose

Even something as simple as beginning with extra Interest, much in the same way the Amulet of Faith does so, would be fine.

Let me point out that the bonus piety is probably not why a player would choose a Monk at game start. They'd choose a Monk because they intend to play a bare-fisted character, since bare fists are extremely good sometimes (such as if you are a Troll, Tengu, or Monsterous Demonspawn, or if you're playing a Transmuter melee build with Blade Hands, as a few examples).

The piety is an extra little bonus is all, much like how the Fighter gets a Potion of Might to start and the Gladiator gets some Nets. Plenty of builds are quite bad at Throwing, and yet make great Gladiators just for being good melee races, regardless of whether or not they can get too much use out of those Nets or not, amirite?

The bonus piety is actually pretty useful for getting various gods up and running quickly, which can make all the difference in early game.

Monks are particularly good at worshipping, but as it happens Xom doesn't care about worship. Xom just wants to see what happens if it switches your arms with your legs.

Once you make the swap and formicids have 4 legs, they would have to move at centaur speed, right? Because four legs?

That'd probably be a buff overall, normal 1h/2h/shield rules, but faster movement speed. Especially if they could wear a barding instead of boots. <3 bardings.

I agree with this. Make monks start their worship with better-than-neutral Xom standing. It's not like it's going to last anyway.

MY suggestion is to have Xom act ten or twenty times immediately when the monk joins.
