new god idea

So I was thinking about Crawl today and came up with what I think would be a fun idea for a God.

Shaft, God of the One Way.

What if there were a deity that hated the stairs... IE, he wanted you to take the one-way portals instead, giving you piety for them and taking it away (or giving penance) when you used a normal stairway? And who REALLY loved shafts.

Not sure what his granted abilities would be, but I would make them movement related (hopefully for getting out of bad spots).

Has this ever been considered? I think it would lead to some unique gameplay, and this is what I think Crawl gods should do.

PleasingFungus has been working on a more fleshed out version of this idea for a while now.

So yes the core idea is good but there's absolutely zero elaboration in this thread on the mechanics of the god. (And the dev wiki proposal would probably also need more work before somebody could start implementing it...)

There aren't many levels to shaft down(piety-gainers are usually plentiful, like corpses to pray over).
And technically you could go upstairs then shaft down again, at least with formicids. Play that game for a few mins = ******

Just read the No-Backtracking God writeup. Nice work!
I think his powers should be more associated with his desires though, much like Chei's are. I don't really get/like the gladiatorial thing, nor do I like
the time-stop idea. He's not the god of Time, that's Chei.

Rather, I think his powers should increase survivability after descent in some other way. Maybe temporary invisibility, or a boost to stealth until the first attack on a level , or the effects of a potion of agility.

Oh, and with regards to using shafts multiple times, maybe his followers shaft deeper on subsequent trips down the same shaft?

Just had another thought, maybe he has a power where his followers can use a shaft and he will cause them to fall on top of the most powerful monster on a level, doing a large amount of damage to it.

God of turning you into a troll who can't use stairs! I actually really like the idea though, mostly because robustness/regen would be extremely useful to just about everyone and would make me want to take up the conduct.

Another area to explore with a god like this: maybe at high piety there's a chance that a given shaft will exit in a smallish treasure trove? Of course where would that exit to...

Yeah, I agree the suggested powers are all over the place right now - I've been working on other things until I brainstorm up a more coherent powerset. (Suggestions welcome!)

I absolutely disagree about the time-stop thing, though - I think that's the best effect currently in the proposal, and the one most strongly associated with his conduct. Retheme it to something like mega-haste ("the world seems to slow to a crawl around you as your movements speed up!") and you aren't stepping on Chei's toes... the only reason I didn't do that already is because I don't want to fuck over formicids.
