What Are You Reading...?

["What are you listening to at the moment"'s ugly sister...]

I have no doubt that the Tavern community is a well-read bunch. List a few of your favourite authors, and maybe the last good book you read.

Fiction: David Foster Wallace, Don DeLillo, Jorge Louis Borges

Nonfiction: David Toop, James Gleick

Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, after getting the film from a buddy. Both are really good.

Of all his books I've only read the Gambler, have you read it too? :) I thought it was very good.

I read it when I was 13, but was really too young. just scammed through the book to add it to the list of "books I read" (oh look at me I'm intellectual.)
but I liked what I understood from it. I read that Dostoievsky wrote it under the pressure of severe gambling debts. his inspiration reminds me of that:

Hirsch I, please tell me what that is from.

Arrhythmia wrote:Gravity's Rainbow. I think I'm even going to finish it this time

Heh, when I read it I got to page 200 or so and, while I was enjoying it, found myself completely lost. So I went back to the start, got on much better (though I'd still be hard-pressed to describe it properly) and finished it. The Crying Of Lot 49 is really good too.

I'm currently reading A Crack In The Wall by Claudia Pineiro (I don't know how to do accents/cedillas etc.), who is apparently Argentina's best-selling crime author. It's good, and seems well translated - not that I speak Spanish, but it reads smoothly and the characterisation comes through very well.

there are lots of comics that relate to older ones, so it is a good idea to start from the beginning.

Just read the Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, excited to pick up the next ones. That man is too talented for his own good.

Just finished A Deepness in the Sky, now working on Solaris. I was expecting "The Ocean is alive!" to be the big reveal, but they explain that within the first couple chapters, and since then it's only gotten weirder and more interesting.

I really enjoyed the Hyperion quadrilogy by Simmons. Other similarly astonishing scifi writers are Alastair Reynolds and the late Iain M. Banks.

I recently read this and enjoyed it so I was looking for his other books. Seems like the small bookstores doesn't have his books.

Iain Banks (is) was a great author, I've only got a couple of his books left to read. Never heard of Mr Reynolds.
