Words Crawl has caused me to go away and find out what they mean recently:

Got more?

I already knew henotheism and ecumenical, but I don't know where I would be without mephitic. Thank you, air magic!

It also teaches you British English spelling vs. American English.

For example: defence vs. defense.

This reminds me of the IOCCC actually... can't we just call stinking cloud "stinking cloud" ? This is not a complaint... I'm just wondering out loud... :)

Unlike practice/practise and licence/license there is no verb "to defense"

I discovered it after several failures searching the game wiki for information on the Deck of Defense.

I think Crawl's policy is to use Australian English actually (although yeah, that tends to be the same as British English in terms of spellings), since Linley's Australian so that's how everything was spelt initially.

This...opens up a vast verbal territory, almost an outback, to exploit. Ladies and gentlemen, we must come up with a way to introduce the words "chunder", "vegemite", "barbie", and many other terms into Crawl.

I really like "vorpal."

A vorpal weapon should go snicker-snack though.

For the non-Australian English speakers out there - that would a horde of vomiting barbequeue pits made out of processed yeast extract.

Actually, we tend not to have our barbies in pits - I hear the Kiwis are into that sort of thing, though.

(Also, the quokka is already an Australianism!)

Not really.

Make him spawn in the Lair or Swamp.

Has to be the Swamp:5 layout where the central vault is shaped like Australia.

I'm pretty sure yaktaur, spriggan, and boggart were made up for Crawl. They're not "real" words. Could be wrong on boggart.

Re: Crawl is good for your vocabulary

Spriggans predate crawl. They're an obscure kind of faery though, and I don't think I'd heard of them pre-Crawl. Boggarts though are more well know- lots of fantasy games have slapped the name on generic goblinoids and ghosty things.

Unless some obscure fantasy author came up with 'em first, I think yaktaurs are ours though. All 12 pages of the Google hits for them come back to crawl. Well, except for one deviant art entry which appears to be of independent origin.

Mythological faeries are pretty awesome, honestly. I would support a fey dungeon branch and then never enter it.

On topic: I new sequester was a word, but sequestration? Thank you, Crawl!
