What are your gaming habits outside of Crawl?

Just curious as to what the Crawl playerbase is otherwise into, because I'm currently trying to get better at maybe way too many things at once (rhythm games, mostly DDR, shmups, mostly Mushihimesama, and a bit of Crawl on the side too).
Do you have a game or kind of game that you're always coming back to, to perfect? Or are you always trying out new titles until you beat them? Do you 'collect' clears and achievements and personal goals, or do you just play to play games in and of itself?
What genres appeal the most and the least?
Crawl itself - Are you only playing until you win once, on and off every now and again or are you a Crawl devotee?

Crawl takes all of the time I can dedicate to playing (which isn't a lot). I liked Heroes of Might & Magic a lot, but currently I just want to play Crawl whenever possible.

I burned out of Risk of Rain, and finished the current episodes of Wolf Among Us, and don't have a console for Dark Souls 2, so its basically just Crawl right now until Terraria updates.

The last four video games I played that werent' crawl were Planescape Torment, EA Sports' NCAA Football 2004, Frog Fractions, and Super Mario Brothers.

4,1,2,1,24 years from first play to first victory in each of those games. Beating football means playing a season with each of the 119 teams and winning the nationall championship. No second wins for any of those games yet.

More on topic, I play DC:SS, just compiled the Jesters build from Git. :P Other than Crawl, I play Minecraft after a long time of not getting into it at all. There's quite a few new things for me to play through. Also Path of Exile, although it's been a while since I've really done anything in it (thanks ebarett for the closed beta invite, btw, even though you're not around lately, the game rocks ever since then). Also some ToME, I'll admit it... And 7 days to die.

I'm deeply ashamed to admit that I'm 25 and haven't beaten SMB yet even though I played it like crazy when I was 10-12. The 8th world was just too much for me back then, apparently. :P Nowadays I don't have a gaming system capable of playing SMB to "remedy" this, sadly.

Not on a dedicated server, I prefer just small private games with a few friends, but if that sounds nice to you, I'd love to set something up! I'd be up for minecraft as well, though my pref is to use a FTB pack of some kind.

(Btw this is an open invite for other people if anyone's interested, though since I'd likely be locally hosting, I'd prefer to keep it at 4 people max)

+1 to HOMM. One of my all time favorites, despite its flaws. Big fan of the Civilization series, also. I liked Diablo II back in the day but burned out on that.

I play some PS3 co-op games with my wife sometimes. (Resistance, Diablo III.)

Crawl, HOMM, and Civ are probably the games that I've found to have the most replay value... Can keep going back to them.

I like board games too. Carcassonne, Settlers of Cataan, etc. And some classics, like Hearts, poker, Mahjong.

Crawl, touhou, and league round out my roster.
A game of the mind, a game of skill, and a game all my friends play.
I haven't "won" crawl yet, only the gods can beat touhou, and only the chosen ones can reach Challenger, so I think my best bet for beating one of these will lie with Crawl.

Have you played c-evo? It is based on Civ 2 but fights are deterministic, troops can be created with different stats/abilities and most annoying elements of Civ2 are removed. Quite a good game IMHO

Get the dsfix patch to make the PC port of DkS 1 a whole lot better. (might need a 360 controller emulator program so your gamepad doesn't suck).

Anyway, DkS 2 is a much better port

That's kind of like asking "Is this +9 +9 giant spiked club of speed better than this cursed -7 -8 club of chaos?".

You should still use a gamepad to play it, though. Unlike its predecessor, Dark Souls 2 actually has usable K&M controls now, but you're still better off using a gamepad.

Re: What are your gaming habits outside of Crawl?

I play a lot of things. So much so that rather than naming specific games it would probably be easier to just say what I particularly like to see in a game.

I prefer games that allow me to create my own characters. This is actually the thing that drew me to Crawl in the first place. (It's also why City of Heroes was the best MMORPG of all time - near infinite customizability.) Even in games where I can't make my own character I still like it if I can at least have a lot of freedom in setting up how the character looks or operates, what sort of abilities they have, etc.

It's not exactly 100% necessary - I still have a lot of games I enjoy that aren't big on character customization - but it is definitely a major plus for me.

EDIT: As an aside, it both tickles me and saddens me to always see people talking about how they have no time for the things they enjoy because of college. Take it from those who have graduated college only to find that our degrees don't mean jack shit. (You have a business degree? Good for you. So do 500,000 other people who also can't find work because all the good positions have already been taken by one-percenter kids who happen to have family members in the company. What, you really think this world is a meritocracy? Only until graduation, I'm afraid.) I'm not saying that you shouldn't bother trying, but you definitely shouldn't focus on it so hard that you have no time for anything else.

1. Crawl
2. Football Manager (the latest one is great)
3. Civ 4 (usually the ROM:AND mod)

They're the perennials. Other recent fun includes Euro Truck Simulator 2, Pinball FX 2, Qvadriga, Eldritch, Talisman and Cataclysm DDA (finally I found another roguelike that I like).

What most of these have in common is that they can be played in bursts while I'm doing/looking at other stuff. And yes, I do have a lot of time on my hands.

Crawl is the only video game I'm playing right now. This will change in some far distant future when Wasteland 2 is actually released.

I play board games with buddies on Sat. night, the usual BoardGameGeek suspects.

Me and the kids play D & D on Sunday afternoon. Last we left off things were looking grim for my mage Bartholomew, getting grappled by a tentacular something in a room filling up with water.

When I'm frustrated with the number of early splats or possibly after losing a character that was technically already a won game, I'll generally fire up starcraft 2 still. It's a great game, despite how critical some of the community has become. If anyone else wanted to play a game sometime, feel free to PM me. I'm decent (gold league 1v1) but don't really care if you're good or bad and I'd team up with anyone.
