So, how do you pronounce the gods' names?

If it doesn't fit anywhere else, it belongs here. Also, come here if you just need to get hammered.

So, how do you pronounce the gods' names?

I know that these names are sometimes intended to be unpronouncable, but I've pretty much gotten my own way of pronouncing them. What are yours?

Mine:

Ashenzari : ash-in-ZAH-ree
Beogh : BAY-oge
Cheibriados : CHAY-bree-AH-dose
Dithmenos : dith-MEE-nose
Elyvilon: eh-LEE-vill-on
Fedhas Madash: FED-ahs mah-DAHSH
Jiyva : JEE-vah
Kikubaaqudgha : kee-koo-bah-KOOD-gah
Lugonu : lu-GON-oo
Mahkleb : mah-KLEB
Nemelex Xobeh : NEM-eh-lex ZO-beh
Okawaru : oh-kah-WAH-roo
Sif Muna : SIF MOO-nah
The Shining One : ASS-hole *cough* I mean, uh...you should know how to pronounce this...
Trog : TROG
Vehumet : VEH-hoo-met
Xom : ZOM
Yredelemnul : EE-reh-deh-lem-nool
Zin : ZIN

Alternately, Nemelex Xobeh's name MIGHT be pronounced "Yugi Moto" and I'm pretty sure Okawaru's name is just Japanese for "Default". And sometimes I refer to Beogh as Klan Hat, King of the Orcs.

I always thought the "gh" in Beogh was silent.

Re: So, how do you pronounce the gods' names?

Well, to be fair, I always interpreted the 'gh' on the end as kind of a moist glottal spitting sound (It just kind of something I can imagine an orc doing), I'm just not sure how to represent that with phonetic spelling.

Actually, most cryptolinguists believe that the correct way to pronounce "gh" in orcish, traditionally, is to punch your interlocutor in the face. It doesn't really translate well to digital media.

"Kawaru" can mean "to change" or "to replace," so O-kawaru would be (very vaguely) "the Great Change" or "the Great Replacement." It should really be O-kawari if it's a noun, though.

Okawari also means "a second helping."

That sort of intolerant behavior is exactly the reason the orcs want to exterminate all humans! ...that and they're jealous of our good looks.

I was kidding about the "default" thing, but that's actually pretty interesting. I could definitely see a god of war referred to as "the great change."

I never pronounce the gods' names. I can't think of any occasion on which I have said them aloud. Perhaps I need to do more subvocalisation.

I don't know many people irl and even those who play video games give me glazed looks if I describe Crawl to them. I think such levels of coolness as you imply are well beyond my reach.

Probably. In english words beginning with "X" pronounce it as a "Z", case in point xylophone, xenophobe, Xerox, etc.
