Alas! He also loves giving polearms of reaching to Merfolk crusaders. Reaching is worse than no brand most of the time.

I was amazed at how crappy the gift was.

I am very much looking forward to the tweaking of god gifts. Sometimes Oka acts a bit like Xom....

It has its extremely situational uses: it can ignore the first in the line in a 1 tile width corridor, hitting the one behind it instead. Imagine there's a rat in front, and an orc warlord behind it. But that said.. pretty useless, yes.

Reaching is also great for hanging out in deep water and killing most anything by mashing "v". But it's not great to receive 6 times a game. And for crusaders, who might just be waiting for a bardiche or a demon trident, it prevents them from fire or frost branding the weapon.

It's nice playing a HOPr and giving your minions reaching weapons, significantly increases their damage. But other then that i can't see much use for it.

it'll be nice once it's a secondary brand that all polearms get. You get in a free hit to approaching melee monsters, and if you're fast you can kite things. It's not always useful, but it sometimes is.

It's the proof-of-concept for one particular implementation of the combat moves overhaul. Sadly, the version of that overhaul that currently appears to be favored does not allow for direct player activation, so evokable reaching as a feature common to all polearms may never actually happen.
