Hey crawlers !

I am wondering, is there any reason why there is no pure Conjuration spell past iOOD ?

I got a suggestion, sooo, there :

Mid range AoE spell, possibly smite targeted, that acts in 2 steps. Once cast, places an orb that pulls every mobs in an area (like the smaller Firestorm) toward itself, and then blow up in a smaller area (3x3 like fireball).

simple answer: unique spell ideas are very hard to think of with the limitations of space in this game.

Pure conjurations are usually (always?) physical damage. A level 9 physical damage spell would be too powerful to pass up. Also, anyone who could cast firestorm could also cast this hypothetical level 9 conjuration spell. I think the conjurations limit at level 7 is intentional.

The way I see it, level 9 spells are generally meant to be epic things that you have to specifically spend a lot of XP for. So getting another one "free" with, say, Fire Storm would kindof undermine that.

I believe it is similar to the reason why there is no pure Air spell past Tornado, no pure Summoning spell past Summon Dragon, no pure Earth spell past Shatter, no pure Translocation spell past Disjunction, no pure Hexes spell past Discord, no pure Transmutation spell past Dragon Form, no pure Ice spell past Ozocubu's Refrigeration, no pure Charms spell past Haste, no pure Necromancy spell past Borgnjor's Revivification, no pure Poison spell past Olgreb's Toxic Radiance, no pure Conjuration/Earth spell past Lehudib's Crystal Spear, no pure Conjuration/Ice/Air spell past Freezing Cloud, and no pure Fire spell at all.

As it turns out, the fact that X is not present is not a good reason to introduce X. Suppose I come into your house, and point out that your bed doesn't have any of my toenail clippings on it. Is this a compelling reason for me to clip my toenails on your bed?

Not in itself - but if someone wanted toenail clippings on their bed the situation might supply the starting point for a discussion about this.

"Too powerful to pass up" can be balanced with some tweaks in number. For exemple, you could have the hypothetical spell do as much as the irresistible part of Firestorm. Dedicated conjurers would still want the Firestorm (more AoE, more potential damage) and would probably want to get rid on the pure conjuration one to free some spell slots. Characters that don't want to invest in elemental schools would still have something to use, with lower damage, but added utility with a form of crowd control.

There are no level 9 dual-school air or earth spells, so the same argument doesn't apply.

What about Flying mountains (level 9 Air/Earth) ?

And since we are in CYC, "Elemental Storm", level 9 Air/Earth/Fire/Ice/Conjuration spell, similar to new Wand of Exploit Weakness which affects everything in LoS with FireStorm/Glaciate/Tornado/Shatter/OoD depending on monster properties.

Toenail Storm (level 9 Conj/Necro).
Pure physical damage, leaves toenail vortices and miasma clouds.

Shadowcall, Level 9 Necromancy/Summoning/Charms - similar to new Dragoncall summons Shadow Fiends and provides immunity to Torment.
Hellcall, Level 9 Fire/Summoning/Charms - similar to new Dragoncall summons Hellions and Hell Sentinels and provides 50% protection to Hellfire.
Only one of Dragoncall/Shadowcall/Hellcall can be active.

Invoke Slaves (level 9 Summoning/Charms) : summons a horde of hostile dragons, but they appear enslaved... Hope that the combat ends before they are free !

It's a new level 9 spell in https://crawl.s-z.org/#play-dcss-summons_adjustments, a new status which summons dragons randomly. Has a cooldown.
