Why do you have an amulet quivered?

twelwe wrote:what do you think my DEFE should have quivered?

I dunno, If nothing else I usually have some darts or small rocks quivered to wake stuff up, so I can lure stuff away from packs and kill them. Sometimes I have more powerful throwing weapons quivered to kill stuff, particularly on elementalists for when i encounter things that are immune to my spells (at least until i pick up some pure conjuration or other-element conjurations)

I'd probably have nothing quivered over an artifact amulet, just in case I should launch it by mistake. (Unless it's something I didn't want, of course at that point I probably wouldn't carry it.)

I am not even sure why it is allowed to quiver non-missiles. I tend to throw a wand or meat ration in almost every game. Accidentally of course. Paying attention to messages, battlefield and HP/MP bar requires looking at 3 different areas of screen all the time :(

The purpose of that is to quiver some cool artefact you want to show off on your victory screenshot.

awkward throwing has helped me multiple times in zot because of running out of stones and chucking ?ID and meat rations at guardians so this is useful and shouldn't be changed.

No.

When I opened the exit vault door, I only got notified of a "you find a stone of tremors" or however the message for spotted items is worded. I couldn't believe it so I ctrl+x'ed. Nothing else. There were a couple blind spots that could have contained more loot, but they didn't. The minotaur wasn't carrying anything, either.

A. Single. Fucking. Stone. Of. Tremors.

Make sure there are no doors nearby. I cannot read maps but some names are suspicious.

  Code:
#############################################################################
# Hidden exit, and trapped loot

All lab exits seem to have "generate_loot" tag so 8-19 items should be present:

  Code:
    int num_items = 8 + random2avg(12, 2);

wheals,
It's in user control panel, Friends&Foes

New in trunk:
Labyrinth minotaurs no longer wait on the stairs. Instead, they scatter items all around the level while you try to find the center.

Yes, I know. I remember I have already written in the forum that I consider it kind of cheating but I started doing it myself recently (with bolts/arrows on a guy who uses them as main weapon) :( Doing it with meat rations hopefully will attract devs attention so they will change something about it, it's hilarious and ridiculous at the same time.

Yes, one of benefits of stealth is that you can throw that meat ration first and the monster feels uncomfortable to shout for help ;)

Ok, sorry, let's call it abusing bad AI.
Why do monsters shout when they see you but don't shout when you throw something or cast a spell at them? I could understand the silence if they still could not see you (it happens often with high stealth) but often they see you and still remain silent despite you have just attacked them. Why?

If you really want to have different behavior, it would make more sense to have the other way around:
1) you deal damage to monster. It hurts so the monster shouts (warning others, or just because of physical pain).
2) you fail stealth check. Monster notices something suspicious and goes out to investigate (and the monster is stupid to warn others because it is almost sure it will find nothing).
Basically that would change almost nothing, you could still retreat luring monster into explored territory, the only change is that now you should not waste your in-game and real time by throwing something and then picking it up.
Just add a command "Move your hands up and down to attract attention of all monsters in LoS" to "t" menu.

I usually throw poisoned needles by clicking on them. Interestingly I haven't read about throwing stuff to attract monsters but the idea just came to me at some point. I guess that's an obvious thing to do. I'm not sure that they shout if you hit them, btw. Is there some calculated or fixed chance when they shout?..

I have just checked it with stones and it looks like it is random. Sometimes they shout, sometimes don't. The same with spells. I believe they should always shout in order to avoid throwing things at them. When they see you just walking, they always shout, correct?

Edit. Yes, it looks like they always shout when you just fail stealth check.

I think sometimes they don't or it's if they enter your los knowing where you are, not sure. But most of the time, they do.

Thank you. My point is that if thrown stone decreases chance for monster to shout, it is a bug/abuse/spoiler/cheat and should be fixed

Logically speaking you might be right, but it's a minor thing and there is no difference in how you lure a monster. The curent way just saves you some time that you would spend dividing monsters by going away with one monster in your LoS

Note that throwing anything (meat ration, dart, stone, large rock) with no launcher equipped makes no noise:

  Code:

static void _throw_noise(actor* act, const bolt &pbolt, const item_def &ammo)
{
    const item_def* launcher = act->weapon();

    if (launcher == NULL || launcher->base_type != OBJ_WEAPONS)
        return;

    if (is_launched(act, launcher, ammo) != LRET_LAUNCHED)
        return;

    // Throwing and blowguns are silent...
    int         level = 0;
    const char* msg   = NULL;

    switch (launcher->sub_type)
    {
    case WPN_BLOWGUN:
        return;

    case WPN_SLING:
        level = 1;
        msg   = "You hear a whirring sound.";
        break;
     case WPN_BOW:
        level = 5;
        msg   = "You hear a twanging sound.";
        break;
     case WPN_LONGBOW:
        level = 6;
        msg   = "You hear a loud twanging sound.";
        break;
     case WPN_CROSSBOW:
        level = 7;
        msg   = "You hear a thunk.";
        break;

    default:
        die("Invalid launcher '%s'",
                 launcher->name(DESC_PLAIN).c_str());
        return;
    }
    if (act->is_player() || you.can_see(act))
        msg = NULL;

    noisy(level, act->pos(), msg, act->mindex());
}

I don't like where this thread is going. So it's now about something completely irrelevant and different.

I need an opinion, and I think you guys can provide it.

I am planning to run an rpg wherein the PCs and NPCs are world-class fighters (up to about Street Fighter competency, so some minor superpowers are common) competing in a tournament on a tropical island, where they can fight whomever they meet, and wager "stars" on it to try to earn enough to get access to the volcano-temple in the middle of the island and challenge the world-masters for the big prize.

Two questions. i need creative ideas:
1) How should I penalize the attacking of the island's natives? They don't fight, and instead provide all the basic services for the fighters, while treating them like visiting celebrities. They also have an anti-cheating squad called VAC who observe fights, and smack the hell out of cheaters. Should the offender get booted? Should he get beaten up? Lose stars?
2) how should I handle the ninja PC in regards to the need to bet on fights? He can sneak in and steal the stars or something, but he won't be able to legitimately bet and still have the element of surprise. He may also want to drop in on a fight in progress, but that won't work either if he's not part of the initial bet. should he be responsible for the amount of the bet by participating?

any ideas? Also, anybody want to participate? You two could fight it out in a game of dice and skill instead of this thread. Winner gets dignity and recovery.

Have those who are attacking natives and servers treated as criminals. It is a criminal act. Normal competitors who go to a fighting competition don't attack non-fighters (unless they get drunk, belligerent, etc.). They get thrown in jail. If this is a video game, you can either choose to have them naturally invulnerable, or you can throw the attacker in jail. In Ultima I, if you stepped out of line in town, the super-powerful guards would hunt you down and whack you. For "jail", you can give them a time-out and consume in-game time with them waiting in a cell. Depends on whether you want auto-capture for criminal act, or have guards handle it. Going forward, continue to penalize the player with raised costs for purchasing from others as people are wary of him as a criminal.

2) how should I handle the ninja PC in regards to the need to bet on fights?

Ninja, please.
