Flight should give ability to fly over plants, mushrooms

The whole concept of flight in DCSS is pretty strange.

You would think you should be able to fly over a plant, but no. You can't even fly over a neutral spriggan or mouse in this game.

To make flight more realistic, we should be at least be able to fly over plants and mushrooms - maybe trees.

Yeah this concept may sound radical, but if you stop and think about it, it makes flight real, instead of hovering only a few inches off the ground (apparently).

supposedly, there is a floor and a roof in each level of the dungeon, so i always assumed the plantlife covered that space fully.

yeah the water is so deep that unless you are a merfolk you can't swim (we train all of these awesome skills but we can't learn to swim?)..

A level can have very deep water but no room to fly over things? Some serious logic issues here. Not to mention how plants and trees can thrive without sunlight, but that's a different topic...

Deep water reaches all the way up to the ceiling, thats why you cant swim over it.

to make flight more realistic we should get rid of all the magic that lets you fly

only well-supported principles of physics for me, thanks

Not a lot of people know this but the dungeon has dropped ceilings throughout (where do you think the HVAC ducting is?), so the actual room height is quite low. "Flight" is more of an exaggerated hover.

You can't fly over trees/plants etc in case flight impromptu expires and you fall crotch first into an oak branch, a fate worse than drowning in lava.

This doesn't explain why you can fly over deep water.

Because it reaches all the way up to the ceiling and you need air to fly through and breathe.

also, can we add ellipsis (...) after the subject of the post, please, like this maybe:

because this looks rather funny:

So the trees are more like bonsai? Shrubs? Some sort of thick box hedge?

They're all in planters, which should tell you something.

Tells me the planters are pretty heavy if I can schlepp about multiple suits of plate armour but not move the planters.

If only there were fewer crossbows and pizzas lying around the dungeon and more adjustable wrenches.

New background proposal: landscape gardener.

I don't think it would quite work out, but sometimes it seems like a good idea to me to 1)let all small or tiny enemies be able to co-occupy spaces and 2) let flying enemies co-ocupy spaces with things that are medium sized or smaller. Assuming plants are medium sized and trees are big or huge, you could then fly over plants unless you are an ogre or troll (or using dragon form). And you would care more what could fly, because flying things could get at you in corridors.

Amazing considering I posted it 3,5 hours ago. You are probably playing (living?) TOME instead, that's not a feat extraordinairé for a paradox mage: http://te4.org/wiki/Paradox_Mage

Flying should give you the ability to fly over sharks.

  Code:
Flying should give you the ability to fly over sharks.

Apparently the sharks, fish and jellyfish jump out of the water to attack you in mid-air, not allowing safe travel above. As you notice, being adjacent on shore does not prevent them eating you, as they will somehow wriggle onto the beach to attack adjacent tiles.

Seriously though, underwater creatures should not be able to attack you if you are on land, adjacent or otherwise.. it's just silly.

while in flight, activated ability could be :

a) fly over adjacent monster

and it can be the equivalent of jump boots or something. If the dungeon is high enough for jump boots, why is it not high enough to fly over a monster?

And why was this thread moved to Crazy Yiuf's Corner if it is trying to bring sanity, not insanity to the game?

But isn't throwing a rock and moving both hands impossible while crawling?
