No, I almost always read-ID unknown scrolls anyway.
Also I actually had a scroll of teleportation when died (I felt lazy to read the scroll ;))

I start a new game, find a +5 ring of slaying on D:1, and then promptly run into a teleport trap that sends me directly into the clouds of fire in one corner of the map.

Iscribing every potion and scroll with !r, !q is very stupid. Not only primary function (to prevent accidental drinking of wrong valuable potion) of such an inscription is lost, but you also make yourself to press extra key each time you drink or read (or evoke).
I don't believe that you make deliberate pause between pressing 'q'<letter> and 'y' that would stop you from drinking wrong potion in case you do a mistake.

Trust me, it is not stupid in my case, I misclick too often. Yes, I pause and read what I am trying to quaff/read, in almost every game I see "Wait, what haste, it was supposed to be a potion of heal wound". On bright side, I save much time by extensive use of item_slot, ability_slot and spell_slot.
Somehting like

item_slot ^= ring of protection from fire:f
item_slot ^= ring of protection from cold:c
item_slot ^= ring of protection from magic:m
item_slot ^= resist corrosion:v

Oh, mouse-powered inventory in offline tiles. I admit, it makes sense.
On the other side, saving time with ability_slot has no correlation with having {!q} inscriptions.
Btw, thanks for writing a patch for these slots, very useful thing. Maybe you could fix a minor bug with it? Whenever you identify an unknown stack of consumables by buying known item from a shop it doesn't swap to the required letter. https://crawl.develz.org/mantis/view.php?id=10514

No, no, I don't use mouse. I should have written "mistype" instead of "misclick". Also it gives me one more chance to change my decision.
You should see me playing real-time games like tankionline.com, I press A, S, D, C, Shift and Windows button instead of Z and X all the time ;)

It has. I have many scrolls/potions automatically assigned to some letters so I blindly press r<letter> or q<letter> instead of looking at my inventory first. But later game with full inventory it is possible that some other scroll/potion is in that letter (because I ran out of "assigned" scrolls/potions and picked up some other scroll/potion which was assigned to that "free" letter) so having that confirmation is very useful. And no, I don't like to use digits with "@" inscriptions

Enchanter, I presume? Back away out to the corridor of trees and try to take them on one at a time. Keep using Corona; that can be really handy to score hits that early in the game.

Yeah, that's what I tried, managed to kill the kobold before going down. Maybe if I hadn't wasted a couple of turns trying to get corona to stick to the kobold and instead ran straight for the other corridor... still slim chance.

Yup. Trick with early game Enchanter(and really every other character) is, the INSTANT you run into a crowd like that your first thing to do should be to at least get yourself into a corridor, and put yourself at minimum chance for harm. If you can escape entirely, of course, you should totally go for it, but yup, you made a mistake of trying to use corona with two enemies on you.

Lesson learned, at least, I presume.

If you're not a naga and you're not wielding an axe you should absolutely always retreat to a 1-wide corridor before fighting groups of enemies.

If you are a naga or you are wielding an axe (or both) you should still probably retreat to a corridor.

I don't love it when I enter a new Spider level and find too many monsters.
I leave immediately, use other stairs to enter and almost die.
I mean after using those stairs I see my character berserk with staff of conjuration while wearing -Tele ring and no scrolls of blinking (only one generated and it was use-IDed).
I retreat upstairs and see my character slowed and confused adjacent to 4 spiders. I survived due to potion of invisibility and being a hybrid who used potion of haste, Fireball and UC 15+ with good defenses.
What I learned is that I should remove staff of energy/conjuration when entering new level as Tm hybrid, not convenient but safe, as other "optimal play tricks" :(

Edit. That's how nasty those stairs were placed.

Duplicated randarts. I assume this intentional? And that they are coded to give only one additional property, like Fire, Dex+3? Kinda sucks when you get two very mediocre ones instead of a chance at something good.

I didn't know Xom gets to pick where the "safe place" is.

edit: Xom teleported me there while I was moving by pressing a key repeatedly, so I wasted several turns before realizing what happened, and Xom also confused me when he teleported me so I couldn't blink, and I died drinking heal wounds. That's not the problem; I had 2 extra lives and I did get away safely. The problem is the respawn location versus what the manual says. There were certainly safer places; most of the level was clear.

Males instinctively try to look bigger, i.e. take more space. This is the way to establish dominance over other males or impress females. When exposed to danger or frightened, men will instinctively raise their arms, thus making themselves appear bigger, while women tend to expose their back.
Same with spreading legs - it makes you take more space. The more space you take, the more alpha you are. This is also true for basically any animal, not just human.

no, it isn't. "alpha" socializing doesn't even actually exist in wolves(the studies that that form of behavior was observed in were of groups of wolves removed from their natural habitat and placed in an environment with wolves they did not know, they do not actually act like that in a natural circumstance because wolves are highly dependent on family dynamics(because a pack is a family). that sort of constant jostling/fighting for social position thing only happens when they've been captured and taken away from their family and placed with a bunch of strangers, and does not represent any sort of situation they would typically be in without human interference. the scientific community has known this for years, the "alpha wolf" model of wolf socialization is super goddamn outdated and even in the fucking 70s one of the most significant proponents of the idea, Dr. David L. Mech, was working to debunk it. read this and then get this biotruths shit outta here.

I am not sure. Personally I cannot sit long time with crossed legs, I lose blood in them and cannot stand up after that. Not even long time, 1-2 minutes is enough to feel unpleasant.

Internet is full of contradictory articles, not sure where to seek the truth.
For example
U.S. National Library of Medicine stated, “The perennial nerve is a branch of the sciatic nerve, which supplies movement and sensation to the lower leg, foot and toes. Common causes of damage to the perennial nerve include crossing the legs regularly.”

Re: I don't love it when...

PostPosted: Wednesday, 14th September 2016, 17:53

Yes, I am dead serious. Anyone who studies animal behavior will tell you that it is a joke of a theory-it's very old(late 40s!), debunked science based on extremely flawed methodology(heavily based on the behavior of captive packs consisting of unrelated individuals, an error reflecting the once prevailing view that wild pack formation occurred in winter among independent wolves).

To be clear, dominance hierarchies do exist, but they vary wildly from animal to animal and the "alpha male" model does not accurately model even the single species it was originally made to model, much less all mammals(and especially not humans). This basically comes down to "don't cross your legs for long enough to make them fall asleep", but that's symptomatic of how doing anything that cuts off blood flow for long enough to make body parts fall asleep is unhealthy. Just don't do it for that long/don't apply that much pressure.
